Skardu to Fairy Meadows is a full day's journey, not a quick add-on: about 165 km west to Jaglot on the upgraded Jaglot-Skardu Road, then a further 30 km or so south-west on the Karakoram Highway to Raikot Bridge, before the jeep and the walk that every Fairy Meadows trip needs. Door to door, counting the drive, the jeep to Tato and the hike up, most people need eight to ten hours from leaving Skardu to reaching the meadow.
Because the two places sit on opposite sides of the same stretch of the Karakoram Highway, they combine naturally into one trip north. This guide sets out the route, how long each stage takes, and whether to attempt it in a single day.

The route: Skardu to Jaglot to Raikot Bridge
The drive leaves Skardu heading west on the Jaglot-Skardu Road, which has been widened and resurfaced in recent years and now takes a good deal less time than the old mountain road it replaced. It follows the Indus for most of its length before meeting the Karakoram Highway at Jaglot, near the monument marking the junction of the Himalaya, Karakoram and Hindu Kush ranges.
At Jaglot, turn south-west onto the Karakoram Highway. The road passes Talechi, with its roadside Nanga Parbat viewpoint, before reaching Raikot Bridge, where the highway crosses the Indus and the Fairy Meadows jeeps wait. You do not need to detour through Chilas to reach Raikot Bridge; Chilas lies a further 60 km or so beyond the bridge, in the opposite direction from Skardu.

Add stops for fuel, food and the viewpoint at Talechi, and the driving alone from Skardu to Raikot Bridge takes four to five hours before the jeep and the walk even begin.
Can you do it in one day?
Technically yes in the middle of summer, when daylight runs from before 6 am to after 7 pm, but it is a long, tiring day that leaves no margin for delay. A landslide on the highway, a queue at the jeep stand, or an afternoon start from Skardu can easily push the walk from Tato into the dark, which is not something to risk on that path.
The more comfortable way to do it is over two days: drive from Skardu to Raikot Bridge or on to Chilas on the first day, sleep there, and take the jeep and walk to the meadow fresh the next morning. Combining Skardu and Fairy Meadows in one trip
Because the route between them runs along the same stretch of highway, Skardu and Fairy Meadows sit well together in a single trip north from Islamabad or Lahore, rather than as two separate journeys. A common shape is Islamabad to Skardu by road or air, several days around Skardu and Deosai, then the drive back out via Jaglot and Raikot Bridge with a stop at Fairy Meadows before continuing to Gilgit or Hunza, or heading home. What to check before you go
- The Jaglot-Skardu Road's current condition. It has been substantially upgraded, but as a mountain road it can still be affected by landslides or maintenance work; ask locally in Skardu before you leave.
- The Karakoram Highway around Raikot Bridge and towards Chilas, which is more exposed to landslides, especially in the July and August monsoon. Our Karakoram Highway road status guide is worth checking the morning you travel.
- The Fairy Meadows jeep track itself, which can close for hours or days after heavy rain. Build a spare day into the plan rather than a tight connection.
- Fuel and cash, since Skardu and Jaglot are the last reliable places for both before Raikot Bridge.
Is this route worth the effort?
If you already have several days in Skardu and are heading north rather than back the way you came, yes: the detour to Fairy Meadows adds one or two days to a route you are driving anyway, for a view of Nanga Parbat you cannot get from Skardu. If your time is tight, or you are flying in and out of Skardu specifically, it is a harder case, since the round trip alone can eat two full days.
