Hotels in Chilas are road-trip hotels: a string of them along the Karakoram Highway on the river side of the town, several with lawns or rooms looking over the Indus. In 2026 online listings, simpler places start at around PKR 4,000 a night and the Shangrila, the best-known name, at around PKR 10,500 or more. For most travellers the things that matter are air conditioning backed by a generator, parking inside the compound, and arriving before dark.

Where the hotels are
Most hotels sit on the highway where it skirts the town, between the bazaar and the river, close together and easy to find as you drive in. That stretch is the practical choice for road-trippers: you pull off the highway, park inside the gate, and leave the next morning without driving through the bazaar. Several of these hotels stand on the edge of the terrace over the Indus, and a room or lawn facing the river is worth asking for.
A few smaller hotels and lodges are in the town's main bazaar. They can be cheaper, but parking is harder and the streets are busier. For a single night on a road trip, the highway is simpler.
Established names
Two hotels on the highway have been taking travellers for many years:
- Shangrila Chilas belongs to the Shangrila group, whose first resort opened in Skardu in 1983. Most of its rooms look over the Indus, and it has a restaurant, lawns, parking and a generator. It is the most comfortable of the established choices and usually the most expensive.
- Panorama Hotel, directly opposite the Shangrila, is simpler and cheaper, with a big garden that is pleasant in the evening. Reviews are mixed, especially on cleanliness, so look at the room before you pay.
Other hotels and lodges along the highway and in the bazaar come and go, and standards vary a good deal. Read recent reviews rather than old photographs, and ask the questions below before you book.
What does a room cost?
These are rough figures from 2026 online listings. Rates change, rise in peak weeks, and walk-in prices can differ from what you see online.

Ask whether the rate includes breakfast and whether air conditioning is charged extra, since some hotels here have added it separately in the past. What to check before you book
Chilas is low and hot, and a bad room there makes for a long night. Before you commit, ask:
- Is there air conditioning, and does it run on the generator? Power cuts are common, and a room without backup can be unbearable from June to August.
- Is parking inside the compound? Keep the car where the hotel can see it, and take valuables in with you.
- Does the room face the river or the road? River-facing rooms are quieter; the highway carries trucks through the night.
- Is there hot water and a working bathroom? Check before you unload the car.
- Can the kitchen serve dinner late if you arrive at dusk, and breakfast early for a 7 am start?
- Is there a family room or connecting rooms, if you are travelling with children or parents?
In July, August and around Eid, book ahead. Chilas fills with traffic heading north, and arriving at dusk with nothing booked leaves you with whatever is left.
Is it safe to stay in Chilas?
Pakistani families stay in Chilas in large numbers every summer, and the hotels on the highway are used to them. It is also true that Diamer has had security incidents in recent years:
- December 2023: gunmen attacked a passenger bus near Chilas, killing ten people.
- 12 February 2026: a bomb hit a Frontier Works Organisation vehicle in Chilas, killing one person.
- April 2026: militants ambushed a police team in the Thor valley near Chilas, killing three policemen.
The practical rules are simple. Drive in daylight and be at your hotel before dark. Check local news and ask at the police checkposts before you set out, and follow police instructions on the road. If the police or your hotel advise against a drive, wait.
Overseas visitors should know that the UK government's travel advice advises against all travel on the Karakoram Highway between Mansehra and Chilas, the stretch through Besham and Dasu. Read your own government's advice, since going against it can void travel insurance, and expect to show your passport and register at police checkposts along the way.
Chilas or somewhere else?
Chilas is not the only place to break the journey. Which stop suits you depends on your route and your destination:

Making the most of the night
- Arrive by late afternoon. The last hour of daylight is a cooler time to see the town's rock carvings; our guide to places to visit in Chilas has an evening-and-morning plan.
- Fill the tank and withdraw cash in Chilas. If you are going to Fairy Meadows, there is no ATM at Raikot Bridge or on the meadow.
- Drink more water than you think. Chilas heat dehydrates quickly, especially after a day in the car.
- Start early. Leaving by 7 or 8 am gets you through the hottest stretch of the Indus valley before midday and to Raikot Bridge with time for the jeep.
