How to reach Shounter Lake
The lake lies beyond the meadows of Shounter Valley, reached the same way as the rest of the valley: a 4x4 jeep track branching off the main Neelum Valley road near Kel. From where the track ends, a short walk over open ground brings you to the lake's edge; it is not a long trek in the way that reaching Chitta Katha Lake further up the same valley system is.
A local jeep and driver are essential. There is no public transport, and the track is not one to attempt in an ordinary car or without local knowledge of current conditions.
What the lake looks like
Shounter Lake sits above the treeline, so the setting is bare mountain slopes and open pasture rather than forest, with the water reflecting the peaks around it when the wind drops. It is quieter and less developed than the lakes lower in the Neelum system, with none of the infrastructure you find at busier spots; there are no cafes, stalls or facilities at the shore.

Even in the height of summer, expect the air to be noticeably colder than in Kel, and the wind at the lake can make it feel colder still. Cloud builds through the day in the warmer months, often bringing rain or a sudden drop in temperature by early afternoon. Mornings tend to give the clearest views and the calmest water; if photography or a swim in decent conditions matters to you, aim to be at the lake before midday.
Weather here can change with little warning, and the jeep track is not a place to be caught in poor visibility. Build a buffer into your schedule and be ready to turn back if conditions deteriorate.
Best time to visit
May to August is the realistic window, and even then the earliest and latest parts of that range can still have snow around the lake. Peak conditions, with the track fully clear and the meadows green, tend to fall from June into early August. Outside this period the route is generally snowbound and not passable.
Planning it as a day trip
A day trip from Kel means an early start, the two-to-three-hour drive up, time at the lake, and the same drive back before dark. Build in slack for the track's condition on the day, and don't plan a tight return time if you also have a long drive back down the main Neelum Valley road afterwards. Staying a night in Kel before and after the trip, rather than trying to combine it with a long drive from further down the valley on the same day, makes for a far less rushed outing.
Carry your own food and water; there is nothing to buy once you leave Kel. A warm layer, a windproof jacket and sun protection all matter here, since the combination of altitude, wind and strong UV catches people out even on a clear day.
Is Shounter Lake worth the trip?
For travellers who want a genuinely remote alpine lake and don't mind a rough jeep ride to get there, yes. It suits people who have already spent time in the easier parts of Neelum Valley and want to go further. It is a poor choice for a first visit to the valley, for anyone short on time, or for families with young children, given the driving conditions and the lack of facilities at the top. Ratti Gali Lake, reached from Dowarian further down the valley, is a comparable high lake with an easier approach for most visitors.
Is it safe to visit?
Kel and the valley above it lie close to the Line of Control between Pakistan and Indian-administered Kashmir. Pakistani visitors travel this route regularly in season, but some foreign governments, including the UK, currently advise against travel within roughly 10 miles of the LoC, an area that covers most of upper Neelum Valley, and this can affect travel insurance for overseas visitors.
