What is Shahi Bazaar?
The bazaar dates from the same period as Pakka Qila, built in 1768 by the Kalhora ruler Ghulam Shah Kalhoro when he made Hyderabad his capital and encouraged traders to settle. "Shahi" comes from shah, king. Accounts describe more than 4,000 shops along it, plus pushcarts and makeshift stalls, and a lane only around 15 feet wide in places.
It is regularly described as one of the longest bazaars in Asia. The claim is hard to test, but the description of its length and density is accurate. It runs uphill and downhill, and side lanes climb steeply from it.
What to buy
- Fabric and dress-making supplies. Laces, threads, beads, borders and trimmings are sold in quantity, and dressmakers shop here.

- Clothing and cloth. Silk, cotton and lawn are sold in the lanes around it.
- Household goods. A lane called Chhotki Ghiti is known for electronics, crockery and stationery.
Whether to buy Sindhi crafts here is a matter of looking. Shops range from wholesale sellers to small family stalls, so compare before you commit.
How to get there
The two ends are easy to find. Pakka Qila is the fort at the top of the old city, and the Market Tower is a clock tower built by the British in 1914. Ride-hailing cars and rickshaws will drop you at either end, and you can walk the length in between.

Timings and off day
We could not find a reliable source for opening hours or a weekly closing day, and Pakistani bazaar days vary by lane and trade. The safest plan is to arrive in the late morning, when most shops are open, and to ask a shopkeeper or your hotel which day the market rests. Avoid the last hour before Maghrib on a weekend, when the lanes are at their tightest.
Bargaining and shopping tips
- Start by comparing. Walk a stretch first and see what the same item costs at three shops.
- Bargain politely. Offer lower than you expect to pay, aim to settle a little above your first offer, and walk away if it does not work. Fixed-price shops exist and will say so.
- Carry small notes and keep your money in a front pocket. Crowded lanes attract pickpockets.
- Check fabric and glass before you pay. Bangles break in transit, so ask for them to be wrapped.
- Do not carry too much. The lanes are narrow, and a large bag is a nuisance.
