Rooplo Kolhi Resort is a government-run resort on the Islamkot to Nagarparkar road, at the foot of the Karoonjhar hills in far southeast Sindh. Opened in August 2017 by the Sindh Tourism Development Corporation (STDC), it is the best-known place to sleep near Nagarparkar, where private hotels are very limited. It is named after Rooplo Kolhi, a local fighter against British rule.
This guide covers who Rooplo Kolhi was, what the resort offers, how to book, and whether it is the right base for the Jain temples and the hills.

Who was Rooplo Kolhi?
The resort is a memorial as much as a hotel. Rooplo Kolhi was a Kolhi from the Karoonjhar area who fought British rule in the Karoonjhar hills in the 1850s. Dawn's report on the opening says he was hanged in 1858 along with his companions, and the Sindh tourism ministry called the resort a small tribute to him. He is a hero locally, and the name is a sign of how Tharparkar's own history is now being used to attract visitors.
What the resort offers
Reports on the opening describe a low-rise property of rooms in several grades, from super deluxe down to simpler single rooms, set among fields below the hills. Sources disagree on the exact number of rooms (figures from 18 to 26 appear), so ask STDC what is available rather than relying on a number.
Do not expect a hotel of the northern-areas kind. Think of a clean, official guesthouse in a remote place: a bed, air conditioning in some rooms, meals by arrangement, and a quiet setting. We could not verify details such as a restaurant menu, wi-fi, or generator hours, and we would not promise any of them.
Rates and how to book
STDC's website lists Rooplo Kolhi from PKR 10,000 (checked in 2026). Rates are for a room, not per person, change over time, and may differ by room grade and season, so treat that as a starting point and confirm when you book.
STDC lists a booking line and email on its website for all its resorts, with offices on Shahrah-e-Attar in Clifton, Karachi. Book ahead, because rooms are few and Nagarparkar has almost nothing else of this standard. Over holidays and festival periods, expect it to fill sooner.
What is around the resort
The resort is in the Nagarparkar area, close to some of the most interesting sites in Sindh:
- Bhodesar mosque, built in 1505 and about 1.5 km from the resort according to Dawn's opening report, with a pond and small dam nearby.
- Jain temples from roughly the 12th to 15th centuries, spread around Nagarparkar. See our Nagarparkar Jain temples guide.
- The Karoonjhar hills, the low range behind the resort. Our Karoonjhar mountains guide covers walks and timing.
- Peacocks, which are commonly seen in the area during the monsoon, as Dawn notes.
Our Nagarparkar visitor's guide puts these in order if you only have a day.
Getting there
Nagarparkar is reached through Mithi, around 130 to 150 km away depending on the source, which usually takes between two and a half and three and a half hours. The Mithi road passes through Islamkot. Our guide to Mithi to Nagarparkar covers the drive, and Karachi to Tharparkar by road covers the approach from Karachi. For wider planning, our destinations page lists the regions we cover.
Border-area notes
Nagarparkar is close to the Indian border. The UK government advises against all but essential travel within 5 miles of the Indian border in Sindh, so check current advice before travelling. Pakistani visitors routinely go to Nagarparkar and the resort, but expect checkpoints and carry your CNIC. Overseas visitors should check their own government's advice, which can void travel insurance, and should ask STDC and local police about any permission needed for foreign nationals. Is it the right base?
Stay here if you want to see the temples and hills early in the morning or late in the day, without driving back to Mithi in the dark. A night at the resort turns a very long day into two sensible ones.
Skip it if you want a polished hotel, or if you only have a day. In that case drive from Mithi and back, or stay in Mithi. Summer is hot here, so the cooler months from October to March suit the stay better.
