Mianwali is a district on the Indus in north-west Punjab, and the main places to visit are Namal Lake, Chashma Barrage and its lake, the Salt Range town of Kalabagh, Jinnah Barrage and the Hindu temple ruins at Mari Indus. None of them is a polished tourist site. The appeal is river scenery, red hills and a district few travellers include, and a single long day or an easy two-day trip from Islamabad covers most of it.

This page is the overview. Each main place has its own guide, linked below, so here we cover how the district fits together and how to plan the route.

Getting to Mianwali

Mianwali is roughly 240 kilometres from Islamabad, and one Dawn writer describes the Kalabagh area as about two hours from the capital on the Hakla to Dera Ismail Khan motorway. From Lahore the usual road runs through Sheikhupura, Sargodha and Jauharabad and takes about six hours. Roads inside the district are narrower and slower than the motorway, so allow extra time between sights.

Namal Lake

Namal Lake lies near Rikhi village in the Namal valley, about 32 km from Mianwali city. It was formed when a dam was built in 1913 and covered about 5.5 square kilometres when full, with hills along the west and south shores. Water levels have dropped in recent years, so check current conditions before expecting boating or birds. Read our Namal Lake guide for the details.

Chashma Barrage and Chashma Lake

The barrage is on the Indus near Kundian, about 56 km below Jinnah Barrage, with the Koh-e-Suleman range beside it. It is also the site of the Chashma nuclear power plant, which means parts of the area are restricted and security staff are present. The reservoir is the draw for winter birdwatching, fishing and picnics. See Chashma Lake for access and timing.

Kalabagh and Jinnah Barrage

Kalabagh sits on the western bank of the Indus where the Salt Range runs down to the river, known for its red hills and views of the river passing through them. The town has an old hillside quarter and the historic Nawab's fort. Our Kalabagh guide covers what is open to visitors.

Jinnah Barrage is just downstream at Kalabagh. It was built between 1939 and 1946, is 1,152 metres long with 42 spillway gates, and feeds the Thal Canal. A 96 MW hydropower station was added on the right bank between 2006 and 2012. It is working infrastructure, not an attraction, so expect to see it from the road or the river and not to go inside.

Mari Indus temples

At Mari Indus, a short distance from Kalabagh, two ruined temples from about the 8th century stand on a hilltop above the river, reached by a climb of about 600 to 700 metres. They are privately owned and not formally protected, so expect ruins rather than facilities. Our Mari Indus temples guide has the architecture and the route.

A simple route for one or two days

  1. Day one: drive from Islamabad to Namal Lake in the morning, then on to Mianwali for lunch.
  2. Afternoon: continue to Chashma if you are there between November and March for birds.
  3. Day two: go to Kalabagh and Jinnah Barrage, then climb to the Mari Indus temples while the light is good.

If you are short of time, pick Kalabagh and the temples together, since they are close. They also connect naturally with a wider Salt Range trip: our Salt Range places guide covers Kallar Kahar, Khewra and Katas Raj.

Is it safe to visit Mianwali?

Mianwali district is in Punjab and is not on the UK government's do-not-travel lists. It does border Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where the UK advises against all travel to districts including Lakki Marwat, Bannu and Karak, and where there have been serious attacks in 2026. Pakistani visitors do travel to Namal, Chashma and Kalabagh. Check local news and current police advice before leaving, travel in daylight and stay on the Punjab side of the river. Overseas visitors should check their own government's advice, which can affect travel insurance.

Is Mianwali worth a trip?

Yes, if you like quiet places, river landscape and heritage that is not packaged for tourists. It suits a self-driven group with a flexible schedule. It does not suit anyone who needs hotels, restaurants and guided access at each stop, or who is travelling in June and July heat.
