Chashma Lake is the reservoir behind Chashma Barrage on the Indus in Mianwali district, about 30 km south of Mianwali city and roughly 304 km north-west of Lahore. Locals visit for picnics and fishing, and it matters more for its birds than for any developed tourist facilities: the site is a recognised wetland where waterbirds gather in large numbers in winter. Go for a quiet day beside the river and for the birds, not for a resort experience.

What is Chashma Lake?
The lake is the reservoir of Chashma Barrage, built between 1967 and 1971 on the Indus, about 56 km downstream of Jinnah Barrage. The reservoir covers about 139 square kilometres by Wikipedia's figure; other sources give smaller numbers, so treat any single area as approximate. The barrage also generates hydropower, 184 MW installed, and irrigates land downstream.
Behind it lies the Koh-e-Suleman range, which gives the west bank a dry, hilly backdrop. The nearby town is Chashma, with the railway junction at Kundian about 11 km away.
Birds and wildlife
The site is a Ramsar-listed wetland, designated in 1996, and it is used by very large numbers of waterbirds. The Ramsar record says up to 200,000 waterbirds use the site for staging and wintering, and that it is an important staging area for cranes in spring and autumn.
Winter is therefore the best season for waterfowl. Bring binoculars, go early or late in the day.
The Chashma and Taunsa Barrage Dolphin Sanctuary covers stretches of the Indus around here and protects the Indus river dolphin. The Ramsar record says dolphins have been recorded near Chashma but had not been sighted recently, so do not expect to see one.
Boating, fishing and picnics
People come to the lake to fish, to picnic on the banks, and to take boats on the water. We found no official rate card or list of licensed boat operators, so agree the price and the route before you get in, and ask for life jackets. Check the weather too: the Indus can turn choppy when the wind gets up, and there is little shelter on open water.
There is little in the way of restaurants or shops near the water. Bring food, drinking water, sun protection and a bag for your rubbish, and do not leave plastic on the shore in a site that exists for wildlife.
Access, the power plants and restrictions
The area around Chashma also hosts the Chashma Nuclear Power Complex, operated by the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, and the barrage itself is a working hydropower and irrigation facility. These are secure installations. Expect police or security checks and restrictions on photography near them, and follow instructions without argument. Ask locally which parts of the shoreline are open to the public on the day you go.
Is it safe?
Mianwali is in Punjab and is not on the UK government's list of areas where it advises against travel. But Chashma is close to the border with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The UK advises against all travel to nearby districts, including Bannu, Lakki Marwat and Dera Ismail Khan, and there were serious attacks in Bannu and Lakki Marwat in May 2026.
Pakistani families still visit Chashma, but check local news and current police advice before you set out, avoid travelling after dark, and do not cross the river into KP. Overseas visitors should check their own government's advice, which may say not to go and can void travel insurance.
How to plan a visit
- Choose a winter weekday for the birds, and start early.
- Arrange your own transport: there is no tourist bus service that we could verify.
- Carry enough water, food, cash and a charged phone, since services are limited.
- Tell someone your route and expected return.
From Lahore it is a very long day by road, so consider staying overnight in Mianwali.
Is Chashma Lake worth visiting?
For birdwatchers and people who like open water and quiet, yes, especially in winter. For families who want facilities, rides and restaurants, no. Namal Lake, about 32 km from Mianwali city, is another lake in the district worth asking about.
