October is when Neelum Valley turns from summer green to gold and red, and it is often called the single best month for colour in the valley. The chinar trees along the river run through yellow, amber and deep red, the crowds of the summer holidays have gone, and the road is at its most predictable, right up until the last few days of the month when the first snow can start to close the upper valley.

What October looks like in the valley
By October the monsoon has cleared, the air is sharp and clear, and the light along the river is some of the best of the year for photographs. The chinar trees that line stretches of the road and stand in the villages move through a full range of colour during the month, from yellow through to a deep red, and walnut trees in the orchards turn a duller yellow-brown that fills in the rest of the palette. The combination is most striking around Keran, where the colour reflects in the river, and in the villages between Keran and Sharda.
Crowds thin out noticeably once the school summer holidays and the 14 August weekend are well behind. Weekdays in October can feel close to empty on stretches of road that are nose to tail with traffic in July, and hotel rooms that are booked out weeks ahead in summer are easy to find on the day.
Temperatures through the month
Early October still carries some summer warmth: daytime temperatures in Keran sit in the low twenties, cooling as the month goes on. Nights are a different matter. Even at Keran's relatively low altitude, October nights are cold enough for a proper jacket, and higher up at Sharda and Kel, night temperatures drop close to freezing by the second half of the month. Pack for the evenings, not the afternoons.

What starts closing in October
October is a transition month, and a few things that run through summer wind down as it goes on:
- Ratti Gali Lake. The jeep track from Dowarian to the base camp is normally open from around July to early or mid-October, and closes as the first snow of autumn arrives on the high ground. By the second half of October it should not be counted on, and some years it closes earlier. Check locally in Keran or Dowarian before you plan a trip around it.
- The Arang Kel chairlift. Often runs until roughly the middle of the month before closing for the season, though this varies year to year with the weather. Arang Kel itself is still reachable on foot later into autumn if the chairlift has stopped, for anyone fit enough for the climb.
- Some seasonal hotels and camps. A few of the smaller guesthouses and the tent camps that operate through summer close as demand falls and the nights turn cold.
Early October is the safer end of the month for anyone who wants to combine the colour with the high lake or Arang Kel. Late October is better suited to the lower and middle valley, where none of this applies.
Where the colour is best
- Keran. Chinar trees along the riverbank, with the colour reflected in the water and Indian-administered Kashmir visible on the far bank, also turning.
- Kundal Shahi and the road to Athmuqam. Walnut orchards and scattered chinars along a stretch of road that is otherwise unremarkable in summer.
- Sharda. The ruins of Sharda Peeth, framed by turning trees, are one of the better photography spots in the valley in October light.
- The road between Keran and Sharda. A slower, more scenic drive than in summer, with far less traffic to contend with.
Should you go in October?
For anyone who wants Neelum Valley without the summer crowds, and who values the colour and the clear light over swimming weather and long summer evenings, October is arguably the best month of the year to go. Early October in particular gives you the colour plus a last, narrower chance at Ratti Gali and Arang Kel before they close.
It suits couples and photographers especially well. It is less suited to families wanting to swim in the river or camp out, since the water and the nights are both cold, and it is not the month to plan a trip specifically around the high lake, since its season is closing rather than open.
