Lahore to Nathia Gali by Road: Route, Timings and Stops

Lahore to Nathia Gali is roughly 480 km by road and takes seven to eight hours with a couple of stops. The route is the M-2 motorway to Islamabad, about four hours, then the Murree Expressway and the narrow Galiyat road along the ridge, another two and a half to three hours. Leave Lahore by 5 or 6 in the morning and you will be in Nathia Gali by early afternoon, before the evening cloud settles on the hills.

The motorway half is easy; the hill half is where the time goes. This guide covers each stage, the 2026 tolls, where to stop, what fog and snow do to the plan, and when to go round through Abbottabad instead.

The route in four stages

1. Lahore to Islamabad on the M-2, about 4 to 4.5 hours with a stop. The motorway starts at Thokar Niaz Baig and runs 375 km north. Before Kallar Kahar it climbs through the Salt Range, about 10 km with gradients of around 7 percent, onto the Potohar plateau. The rest is straight, six-lane motorway.
2. Across Islamabad to Bhara Kahu, 30 to 45 minutes. Leave the motorway at the Islamabad end and head through the city for Murree Road. The Bhara Kahu bypass, opened in 2023, takes you past the old bottleneck in the Bhara Kahu bazaar and onto the road to the hills.
3. The Murree Expressway, about an hour. A four-lane dual carriageway climbs through pine forest past the Phulgran toll plaza. It is rarely the problem, except at weekends near Murree itself.
4. Murree to Nathia Gali, about 32 km and an hour to an hour and a half. The Galiyat road skirts Murree and runs along the ridge through Barian, Changla Gali and Dunga Gali: two narrow lanes, tight bends and small bazaars.

How long does the drive really take?

On the motorway, the time is predictable. At the legal 120 km/h, the M-2 alone is just over three hours of driving; with a fuel and tea stop, four to four and a half is realistic. From Islamabad to Nathia Gali, allow two and a half hours in normal traffic.

A sample day with a 5:30 am start from Lahore:

That is about seven and a quarter hours. On a summer Saturday, at Eid or after the first snowfall, add one to three hours, almost all of it around Murree and in the Nathia Gali bazaar.

When to leave Lahore

In summer and autumn, leave at first light. An early start beats the heat on the plains, gets you through Murree before the day-trippers from Islamabad and Rawalpindi, and puts you on the ridge road in daylight. Cloud often settles on the Galiyat in the evening, and the last stretch is not a road to meet for the first time in the dark.

Avoid a Friday evening departure. It puts you on the hill road at night, tired, and in the weekend queue.

In December and January, fog changes the plan. Dense fog regularly closes sections of the M-2 near Lahore. On 29 December 2025 the whole stretch from Lahore to Kot Momin was shut for poor visibility. The Motorway Police say travel in fog season is generally safest between 10 am and 6 pm, which rules out the dawn start. On a winter trip, drive to Islamabad on the first day and go up to the hills the next morning. Call the Motorway Police helpline, 130, or check the National Highways and Motorway Police before you set off.

Coming home, leave Nathia Gali by about 10 am to reach Lahore by early evening, and never later than early afternoon.

Where to stop on the way

The M-2 has five service areas in each direction: Sukheki, Sial, Bhera, Kallar Kahar and Chakri, with fuel, food, washrooms and workshops.

• Bhera is roughly halfway and the natural breakfast or lunch stop.
• Kallar Kahar sits at the top of the Salt Range. On the way home, stop here before the long descent.
• Chakri is the last service area before Islamabad and a sensible place to fill the tank. Don't count on finding fuel along the Galiyat road, and after snow or in a long jam you will want a full tank.

Beyond Islamabad, stops are simpler: tea and snacks in Murree, Barian or Changla Gali.

Tolls, the M-Tag and the car

• M-2 toll. From 5 July 2026, the full Lahore–Islamabad trip costs about Rs 1,430 for a car. The rate is revised every year, so treat it as a guide.
• Murree Expressway toll. About Rs 300 for a car at Phulgran, from 10 July 2026.
• M-Tag. Since 15 June 2026 an M-Tag has been mandatory for the motorways, and cash top-ups ended on 30 June. Make sure your tag is registered, not an old one due for replacement, and topped up digitally before you leave home.
• The car. The whole route is paved, and ordinary cars drive it every day in summer. Check tyres before a long hot run on the M-2, and check the brakes before the hills.

The one stretch that deserves care on the way home is the Salt Range descent south of Kallar Kahar. It is long and steep, with heavy lorries, and brakes that have already worked hard coming down from Murree can overheat. Use a lower gear and keep your distance.

The other way: via the Hazara Motorway and Abbottabad

Instead of crossing Islamabad, you can join the M-1 towards Peshawar where the M-2 ends, turn north at the Burhan interchange onto the Hazara Motorway, and leave it at Havelian for Abbottabad. From Abbottabad the road climbs east through Harno and Bagnotar to Nathia Gali, about 32 km.

This is a little over 500 km in all, and usually slower than going through Murree. It earns its place when:

• Murree is jammed, on a holiday weekend or after snow
• You are combining the trip with Abbottabad or Thandiani
• You want a loop, going up one way and home the other

Check the tolls before you go, because this route adds the M-1 and the Hazara Motorway.

Snow and monsoon on the hill section

The M-2 is an all-weather road; the hill section is not. From December to February, heavy snow closes the Galiyat road, and the district administration has several times stopped tourists entering at Barian and Harno, the two entry points: in March 2025, for four days from 25 January 2026, and again on 10 February 2026. In the monsoon, landslides block the ridge road after heavy rain, usually for hours rather than days.

Is Nathia Gali worth the drive from Lahore?

Yes, for two nights or more. Seven or eight hours each way is too much for a single night: you arrive tired, spend one evening in the bazaar and leave the next morning. With two nights you get a full day on the trails, the Pipeline Track or a climb up Mushkpuri, and the drive becomes part of a proper break.
