Murree vs Nathia Gali: Which Hill Station to Pick

Murree vs Nathia Gali comes down to what you want from a day or two in the hills. Murree is the easy, busy option: about an hour from Islamabad, with the Mall Road, the chairlift and cable car at Patriata, and more hotel rooms than anywhere else in the hills. Nathia Gali is the quieter, greener one: another hour or so beyond Murree along the ridge, higher and cooler, with real forest and some of the best short walks near the capital. For a day trip or a family outing built around rides and a bazaar, choose Murree. For a night or two of fresh air and walking, choose Nathia Gali.

Both sit on the same forested ridge, and on a bad weekend both are jammed. This comparison covers crowds and traffic, what there is to do with children, hotels, snow, and which one suits which kind of short break.

The short answer

If you have a single day, a car full of children and no wish to spend five hours on the road, go to Murree. You are there in about an hour, there is plenty to fill the day, and you are home for dinner.

If you have a night or two and want to walk under the trees, breathe cooler air and be somewhere that feels like the mountains rather than a town, go to Nathia Gali. It asks for more driving and more patience at the bazaar, but it is a calmer place to wake up in.

Crowds and traffic

This is the part that decides most trips, because both towns are close to Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar and Lahore, and both fill up on the same days.

Murree

Murree is the country's best-known hill station, and it shows. On summer weekends, at Eid, on 14 August and after the first snowfall, the roads into town and the chowks around the Mall slow to a crawl. The authorities now manage it actively:

• The Mall Road is closed to traffic at the busiest times, and the area around GPO Chowk is kept free of parked cars.
• Behaviour on the Mall is policed. In December 2025 the Murree police imposed Section 144 on the Mall Road over the holidays to keep out unruly visitors and keep it family-friendly.
• Vehicle numbers are controlled in snow. In the 2025–26 winter, cars entering Murree were counted digitally at the Satra Meel toll plaza and let in according to the parking available.

The upside of all this is that Murree is built to absorb crowds, with more parking, more restaurants and more rooms than anywhere else on the ridge. The downside is that you are never alone.

Nathia Gali

Nathia Gali is smaller and much less built up, but it has its own bottleneck. The town is strung along one narrow road, and at weekends the bazaar jams badly; in July 2025 The Friday Times described it as virtually impassable by car even on a weekday evening. And because the usual route runs through Murree, you meet Murree's traffic first.

The difference is what happens away from the road. Walk ten minutes from the Nathia Gali bazaar and you are in the forest. Walk ten minutes from the Murree Mall and you are usually still in town.

Things to do with children

Murree

Murree is the stronger choice for a day of outings rather than walks:

• The Mall Road for walking, snacks and shops, best in the morning before it fills up
• Patriata, also called New Murree, about 15 km south-east of the town, where the Punjab tourism corporation runs a chairlift and a cable car up to around 2,300 metres. Tickets usually cover both rides; prices have changed several times, so check the current rate at the counter.
• Kashmir Point and Pindi Point for views and easy strolls through the pines
• Bhurban, a short drive away, for a quieter afternoon

Everything is close together, food is never far away, and there is little uphill walking unless you choose it.

Nathia Gali

Nathia Gali suits families who like to walk:

• The Pipeline Track from Dunga Gali to Ayubia, about 4 km and nearly flat, shaded by old trees, with tea stalls along the way. It suits children and grandparents, though not prams.
• Lalazar Wildlife Park, a small park above the town with enclosures and an aviary, about half an hour's walk through the forest from the road
• St Matthew's Church, a cedar-wood church completed in 1914, a short, steep walk above the bazaar
• Mushkpuri and Miranjani, the two highest points in the Galiyat, for older children and fit adults: half-day walks through forest to open summits

What Nathia Gali lacks is rides. The Ayubia chairlift nearby was shut in 2021 as unsafe. In July 2026 officials said its restoration was complete and it would reopen soon, so check locally before promising it to the children.

Hotels and where to stay

Murree has a huge number of hotels and guesthouses, from rooms above the shops near the Mall to large resorts, and the Pearl-Continental at Bhurban at the top end. The sheer numbers mean more choice at the budget end, and, outside the peak nights, a better chance of finding something on arrival. The trade-off is that many hotels in town look onto other buildings, and those close to the Mall can be noisy until late.

Nathia Gali has far fewer rooms. As a rough guide from 2025–2026 listings, budget rooms ran around PKR 4,000 to 10,000 a night midweek, mid-range hotels around PKR 12,000 to 30,000, and the top end, including the DoubleTree by Hilton that opened in August 2025, PKR 40,000 and more. In either town, confirm parking when you book, ask how the room is heated if you are going in winter, and get the rate in writing. Prices jump at weekends, at Eid and after snowfall.

Snow: which is better in winter?

Both get snow, mainly from December to February and sometimes into March. Nathia Gali, a couple of hundred metres higher, usually gets more. In the winter of 2025–26 a storm in late January left three to four feet across Nathia Gali, Dunga Gali and Ayubia. It is beautiful under snow and quieter midweek, but the Galiyat road closes after heavy falls, and in severe spells the authorities stop tourist traffic at Barian and Harno, the two ways in.

Murree is closer, has more hotels and has the more organised winter arrangements: facilitation centres for tourists, snow-clearing machinery kept at Jhika Gali and Kashmir Point, and the vehicle count at Satra Meel. It still closes when the snow is heavy. In late January 2026, after nearly two feet of snow, the administration stopped all traffic at the Satra Meel toll plaza and banned tourist entry, then reopened in stages as the roads were cleared.

Neither place is safe to treat casually in a storm. In January 2022 more than 20 people died when a snowstorm trapped traffic on the roads around Murree, many of them in their cars. The rules that matter:

1. Book a room before you go, and don't plan to drive up and back in a day after a big snowfall.
2. Check the road and the forecast on the morning you leave, and turn back if the police say the road is closed.
3. Never sit in a stationary car with the engine running if snow may have blocked the exhaust.
4. Carry chains, warm clothes, water and a full tank.

For a first winter trip with children, Murree is the simpler choice. For deeper snow and a quieter stay, Nathia Gali, midweek, with a hotel on the main road.

Summer, monsoon and autumn

In May and June both are a relief from the heat of the plains, with Nathia Gali a few degrees cooler. In July and August the monsoon brings mist, rain and landslides to the whole ridge; views come and go, and the roads can close for hours after heavy rain. From mid-September to November the air clears, the crowds thin, and both are at their best, Nathia Gali especially for walking. Can you do both?

Easily. Nathia Gali is only about 32 km beyond Murree on the same road, so one natural plan is to drive through Murree early, spend the night in Nathia Gali, and stop in Murree or Patriata on the way home. With two nights, you can walk the Pipeline Track one day and ride the Patriata cable car the next.
