You can hire a tour guide in KPK through your hotel, a registered tour operator or a local trekking outfit, and for most day visits you do not need one at all. A guide is worth paying for on high-altitude tracks such as Ansoo Lake, on longer treks, and in areas where local knowledge and language help. One 2026 guide puts local trek guides in the Naran and Kaghan area at about PKR 2,500 to 4,000 a day, but other sources vary widely, so agree the price before you walk.

Do you need a guide in KPK?
Not for the well-trodden places: Nathia Gali's bazaar, Ayubia's chairlift or the road to Naran need no guide. You do want one when the route is not signposted or the conditions can turn dangerous:
- High lakes and passes such as Ansoo Lake, where the trail crosses streams and can be covered with snow or ice. One Naran guide describes a local guide as essential there.
- Multi-day treks and peak climbs, where route finding, weather and altitude matter.

- Areas with security checkposts or language barriers, where a local who knows the officials and the customs is useful.

How much does a guide or porter cost?
Rates are not fixed and there is no official tariff we could find. The only published figure we could trace to a 2026 source is PKR 2,500 to 4,000 per day for a trek guide around Ansoo Lake in Kaghan. That source says prices are highest in July and August and lower in May and September. Asking about Galiyat gave figures from about PKR 500 to PKR 6,000, which is too wide to trust, so ask two or three people and treat the middle as a guide.
We found no reliable figure for porters. Ask what the price includes: food, tea, return travel and a tip, and whether it is per day or per trip. Prices change every year, so use these numbers as a rough guide, not a quote.
How to hire a guide safely
- Ask your guesthouse first. One Kaghan guide reports that a guesthouse referral is more reliable than negotiating at the bazaar, and staff tend to know who has walked the route recently.
- Use a registered operator for longer trips. The KP Culture and Tourism Authority has made online registration mandatory for tour operators and travel agents, and has advised tourists to avoid unregistered ones. Ask to see the licence, or check with the authority in Peshawar.
- Ask for a name, a phone number and references. A reputable guide can name recent clients and routes.
- Agree the terms in writing or by message. Price, hours, route, food, and what happens if weather stops you.
- Check the basics. Boots, a jacket and a working phone. Ask about first aid and whether they will turn back if conditions change.
If the person who approaches you at a trailhead is the only option, it is normal to ask for a short trial, such as the first hour, before committing to a full day.
Etiquette with guides and porters
- Treat them as a colleague. They know the path and the weather better than you. Listen when they say to turn back.
- Share water and food. Feed a porter and guide as you would yourself on a day-long hike.
- Tip if the service was good. A tip is expected in many places, but there is no fixed rate.
- Respect local customs. Dress modestly, ask before photographing people, and avoid disturbing shrines and villages.
- Carry your rubbish out. Do not leave plastic on trails or beside lakes.
Is it safe? Security and advice
Some areas of KP are covered by government travel warnings, and a guide does not change that. The UK government advises against all travel to areas including Swat, Upper and Lower Dir and Peshawar, and against all but essential travel to Shangla and Mardan. Security in parts of KP worsened in 2026, including a suicide bombing in Kabal, Swat, on 2 August that killed 17.
