Booking hotels in the northern areas safely means confirming the room, the price and the cancellation terms in writing before you travel, and having a backup in mind if the first choice falls through. Most guesthouses in Hunza, Skardu, Naran and Kaghan are small and family-run, so the process is closer to a direct conversation than a click-and-confirm booking.

Direct booking versus online platforms

A minority of hotels in the north, mostly the larger resorts and mid-range chains, list on platforms like Booking.com or Agoda. Most guesthouses, especially smaller family-run places in Hunza, Skardu, Naran, Kalam and Neelum valley, don't, and are booked directly by phone or WhatsApp.

• Booking directly (phone or WhatsApp) usually gets you the actual rack rate without a platform's commission built in, and lets you ask specific questions: is there heating, is hot water on a generator, can you see the mountain from the room. It also puts you in touch with someone who can help if plans change on the road.
• Booking through a platform is easier to compare and often comes with a cancellation policy stated up front, but coverage of northern properties is patchy, and prices can run higher than calling direct.

Before you pay anything

• Get the total price in writing, including any extra charge for heating, generator use in winter, or an extra bed, before you commit. Verbal quotes can drift once you arrive.
• Ask what's included. Breakfast is often included in the north; other meals usually aren't unless you ask.
• Check the cancellation and rescheduling terms, especially in peak season, when advances are commonly non-refundable but adjustable to a later date.
• Save the conversation. A WhatsApp message confirming dates, room type and price is worth more at check-in than a memory of a phone call.

Advance payments

In peak season, from June to August and around Eid, many hotels in Hunza, Skardu and Naran ask for an advance, often somewhere between 30 and 50 percent of the total, to hold the room. This is standard practice given how quickly rooms fill, not in itself a sign of anything wrong.

• Pay only after you have the hotel's name, room type, dates and price confirmed in writing.
• Use a traceable payment method (bank transfer to a business account, or a payment app that keeps a record) rather than cash sent through an unverified third party.
• Be cautious of a stranger on social media offering a heavily discounted advance-only deal for a well-known hotel. Confirm directly with the hotel itself if a price looks unusually low.
• Keep the transaction reference and the confirming message until after your trip.

Reading reviews usefully

Reviews on Google Maps and Tripadvisor are the most useful independent check on a hotel's current standard, since northern hotels change hands and quality can shift year to year. Read recent reviews, from the last season rather than several years back, and weigh anything about heating, water pressure and generator hours in winter more heavily than comments on décor.

For hotels with few or no reviews, ask the hotel to send recent photos of the actual room, not just the exterior or a stock image, before you pay an advance.

Booking around peak season

• Book Hunza and Skardu for June to August at least a month ahead, and earlier still for the week around Eid, when rooms in Karimabad, Skardu town and Naran can sell out completely.
• Have a second and third choice hotel in mind for the same night, particularly if you're travelling without a confirmed booking for a stretch of the trip.
• Call the evening before to reconfirm a booking made weeks earlier, since road conditions and group changes mean plans shift on both sides.
• Outside peak season (spring and autumn shoulder months), most hotels have space, and it's reasonable to arrive without a booking in smaller towns, though the better-known guesthouses still fill on weekends.

What to do if a hotel cancels on you

It happens, usually because a hotel oversold rooms or a group booking took priority. If it does:

• Ask the hotel to help arrange an alternative nearby, since they usually know which properties have space.
• Keep your written confirmation so you have grounds to ask for a refund of any advance paid.
• In towns with several hotels, such as Karimabad or Skardu, a same-day alternative is usually findable; in smaller places with one or two options, this is harder, which is another reason to book those legs further ahead.

Is it worth booking everything in advance?

Not always. For a trip through towns with plenty of hotels, booking the first and last nights and staying flexible in between works well and lets you adjust the itinerary for weather or mood.
