Astore valley has three places to sleep, and each suits a different night of the trip: simple hotels and guesthouses in Astore town, government rest houses, guesthouses and campsites in the forest at Rama, and seasonal tent camps at Minimarg and Domel. Astore town is the base almost everyone uses at least once, since it has the widest choice and the fuel and shops the side valleys don't.

Staying in Astore town
Astore town, at about 2,550 metres, is where most visitors spend their first and last nights in the valley. It is a small district headquarters with a bazaar, and its accommodation is simple rather than smart: budget hotels and guesthouses rather than resorts.
What you will find:
- Small hotels, generally near the town centre or the DC office area, with basic rooms, attached bathrooms in the better ones, and a restaurant or simple food on site.
- Guesthouses, often family-run, in and around the town and in Eidgah nearby, with private parking and a garden in some cases.
- Places on the Rama road, on the edge of town heading towards the meadow, which put you closer to an early start for Rama the next day.
Standards and prices vary a good deal from one place to the next and change year to year, so ask about hot water, heating and what meals are included before you book, and read recent reviews rather than relying on photographs. Astore town is also the practical place to arrange a jeep for Rama, Rupal or Minimarg, so many visitors choose a hotel that can help with that as well as a room.
Staying at Rama Meadows
Rama, about an hour by jeep from Astore town, is the easiest overnight trip out of the valley, and it has its own small range of places to stay: several government rest houses (booking for these has changed hands in recent years, so ask locally who is running them this season), a handful of private guesthouses and small hotels, and campsites with tents for hire or a pitch for your own. Rooms fill up in July, August and over Eid, so book ahead or be ready to camp.

Staying at Minimarg and Domel
Minimarg and Domel, on the far side of the Burzil Pass, are a different proposition entirely. There is no commercial hotel in the way Astore town or Rama has one. What exists is a handful of seasonal tent camps set up by local operators near the lakes at Domel, and, for some visitors with prior arrangement, army accommodation. Both need booking through contacts in Astore before you set off, and places are limited.

How to book
- Phone ahead where you can. The established places list numbers online; for smaller guesthouses, your travel contact or a call from your last stop with signal often works better than trying from the road.
- Confirm the evening before, especially for Rama and Minimarg, since plans there change with the weather and the road.
- Carry cash for the whole stay. There is no reliable card payment in the valley, and no ATM once you leave Astore town.
- Ask what is included: meals, hot water, heating and blankets are not always part of the room rate.
Which base suits your trip?
A short trip, two or three nights: stay in Astore town and do Rama as a long day trip, saving the packing and booking that a night at the meadow needs.
A longer trip, four days or more: split the nights, a night or two in Astore town, a night at Rama, and if your dates and the road allow, an attempt at Minimarg with its own overnight at Domel.
Travelling with young children or older parents: Astore town and Rama are both manageable; Minimarg's long drive and basic camps are a harder call, and worth thinking through with our places to visit in Astore valley guide before you commit.

Do I need to book hotels in Astore in advance?
For Astore town, booking a day or two ahead is usually enough outside peak weeks. For Rama in July, August and over Eid, and for any camp at Minimarg, book further ahead through a local contact.
Can I camp in Astore valley?
Yes, mainly at Rama Meadows, where there are established campsites, and at Domel near Minimarg in seasonal tent camps. Camping in Astore town itself is uncommon.
Is there an ATM in Astore?
Don't rely on one. Carry enough cash from Gilgit or before you leave the Karakoram Highway, since payment throughout the valley is in cash.
Where should families with children stay in Astore valley?
Astore town for the base, with a day or overnight trip to Rama, which is reached by an easier jeep ride and has simple but manageable accommodation. Minimarg is a harder trip for young children.
