What Chail valley offers
Chail is not a headline destination the way Kalam or the higher meadows further north are; it is a smaller, greener valley that produces mushrooms, herbs, fruit and timber for the surrounding area, and its appeal is quiet village scenery rather than a single dramatic sight. The valley climbs from Madyan into pine forest and open meadow, with a stream feeding down from the Bashigram side that eventually joins the Swat river.
On the Chail road itself, close to Madyan, is one of the district's established trout hatcheries, raising both common and brown trout. It is a working facility rather than a tourist attraction in its own right, but it is a point of local interest and an easy stop on the way in or out of the valley.

Chail is reached via a side road that branches off from Madyan, itself about 56 km north of Mingora on the main Swat valley road toward Bahrain and Kalam. The road into Chail starts paved close to Madyan and becomes a rougher jeep track further into the valley, so a hired jeep or a 4x4 is the more reliable option once you are off the main road, particularly after rain.

What to expect
Village life continues much as it does across the rest of rural Swat: small farms, orchards and grazing rather than any developed tourist infrastructure. Simple accommodation may be found in Madyan itself, which has hotels and guesthouses across a range of budgets; within Chail valley, don't expect more than a village shop or two, and plan to base yourself in Madyan rather than staying overnight in the valley.
Bring cash, since there is no reliable way to withdraw or exchange money once you leave Madyan, and check the state of the jeep track locally before setting out, since it is not maintained to the standard of the main valley road.
Is Chail worth a visit?
For travellers who already have a few days in Swat and want a quiet half-day away from the busier stops around Kalam and Malam Jabba, yes: Chail offers genuine village and meadow scenery with almost no other tourists.
