Madyan, Swat: Riverside Stays and Things to Do

Madyan, in Swat, is a small riverside town about 55 km above Mingora at 1,320 metres, where the valley narrows, the air cools, and two side valleys, Chail and Bishigram, open to the east. It is the best base in middle Swat for exploring those valleys, eating trout, and breaking the drive to Kalam. Its hotels line the main road and the river, and it is quieter than Bahrain, 8 to 10 km further up.

Why stay in Madyan?

Madyan sits roughly halfway between Mingora and Kalam, at the point where lower Swat's farmland gives way to the narrower, wooded upper valley. That position is its main strength.

• It splits the drive to Kalam. A night here means you meet the broken road above Bahrain fresh, in the morning, rather than at the end of a long day. Our Islamabad to Kalam route guide describes that stretch.
• It is a base for the side valleys. Chail and Bishigram are both short drives away and see far fewer visitors than the main road.
• It is calmer than its neighbours. Bahrain has the busier bazaar and Kalam the crowds; Madyan is somewhere in between.

The town's own people are largely Torwali, speakers of a Dardic language, alongside Pashto. You will hear both in the bazaar.

Chail valley

Chail is the closer of the two side valleys, about 15 minutes by car from Madyan up a road that follows a stream. It is really two settlements: new Chail, the village by the stream that you can drive to, and old Chail, the houses scattered on the slopes above, which you reach on foot in a quarter of an hour or so.

This is the easiest half-day from Madyan:

1. Drive up to new Chail in the morning.
2. Walk up to old Chail on the slopes above.
3. Stop at a trout farm on the way back down the Chail road for lunch.

The valley produces mushrooms, fruit and timber, and it feels like a farming valley rather than a resort. Ask before photographing people or houses.

Bishigram valley

Bishigram opens to the east of Madyan up the Madyan Khwar. The road into it is only partly paved. An ordinary car can manage it in dry weather if driven with care, but a vehicle with more clearance is more comfortable, and after rain it is best left to jeeps. Allow 40 to 50 minutes from Madyan.

The valley is quiet, green and very little developed. It is also home to one of the rarest languages in Pakistan: Badeshi, which a 2018 BBC report found was spoken by only a handful of people.

For most visitors Bishigram is a day's outing: drive in, walk for a few hours, and come back to Madyan for the night. Above the valley, Bishigram Lake is a high mountain lake reached by a trek of four to five hours from the end of the road, and it is frozen for much of the year. It needs a full summer day, a local guide and proper walking gear, not trainers and a picnic.

Trout in Madyan

Swat is one of Pakistan's main trout-producing districts, and Madyan is one of its centres. The government trout hatchery, on the Chail road, was rebuilt after the 2010 floods destroyed it, and private trout farms line the streams of Madyan and Chail. The 2022 floods hit the farms again.

The simplest way to eat trout is at one of the farm restaurants on the Chail road, where the fish come straight from the ponds and are usually fried. Riverside hotels in Madyan also serve it. Prices change with the season, so agree the price before the fish goes into the pan.

Fishing the rivers yourself is a different matter, with its own rules and seasons, so ask locally before you bring a rod.

Walks by the river

Madyan is a good place to stretch your legs after a morning in the car:

• An evening walk through the bazaar, where shops sell embroidered shawls and other local handicrafts.
• A walk along the riverside road, with the Swat river loud below you and the ridges above.
• Longer walks up the slopes above town, which are best done with a local guide, because paths are unmarked.

Treat the river with respect. Stay on the road or the higher banks rather than down on the rocks, keep children close, and in the monsoon don't go near the water at all. The Swat river rises quickly after rain upstream, even on a clear day in Madyan. In June 2025 a flash flood swept away tourists picnicking on the riverbank near Mingora.

The hotel strip: how to choose a room

Madyan's hotels are strung along the main road and the riverbank, from simple rooms above shops to larger riverside hotels with restaurants. Many are family-owned, and quality varies more than the photographs suggest.

The river has shaped this strip. In the floods of August 2022, around 30 hotels built on the riverbed at Kalam, Bahrain, Madyan and further down the valley were destroyed and another 50 damaged.

Before you pay a deposit, ask:

• How far is the room from the river, and how high above it? In July and August, choose one set well back.
• Which side of the building is the room on? Road-side rooms are noisy; river-side rooms are louder still, with water.
• Is there hot water, heating and backup power? Nights are cool from October.
• What is the rate on your exact dates? Eid and August weekends cost far more.

Is it safe to visit Madyan?

Domestic tourists continue to visit Madyan and upper Swat, and homes in Madyan and Kalam are still being turned into seasonal guesthouses. But Swat's security worsened in 2026. In July residents reported armed men in the mountains of Matta and Charbagh, and on 2 August a suicide bombing at the Kabal police station near Mingora killed 17 people during a peace rally.

Check local news and current police advice before you travel, drive in daylight, carry your CNIC and follow instructions at checkpoints. Overseas visitors should know that the UK government advises against all travel to Swat and that going against such advice can void travel insurance.

The road is a hazard in its own right. The section at Damlai, near Madyan, is one of the stretches of the N-95 still listed as badly damaged since 2022, with funds for repairs approved in 2026.

Madyan or Bahrain: which suits you?

Choose Madyan if you want a quieter night, plan to explore Chail or Bishigram, or are breaking the drive to Kalam and want to be on the road early.
