The best time to visit KPK depends on which part of it you mean. For the high valleys, Naran, Kumrat, Kalam and upper Chitral, it is June to September, because snow closes or cuts them off for much of the rest of the year. The Galiyat, Abbottabad and lower Swat work in almost every month, with spring and autumn the most comfortable. Peshawar and the plains are best from October to March, since summer highs there pass 40 °C.
The one season to plan around everywhere is the monsoon, from late June to mid-September, which brings the province's worst floods and landslides. This guide goes region by region, then sets out which month suits which kind of trip.

Hazara: the Galiyat, Abbottabad and Kaghan
The Galiyat and Abbottabad are the most forgiving part of the province. Nathia Gali, at 2,410 metres, has summer days in the low twenties and cool nights, so it stays pleasant through June when the plains are baking. Abbottabad, much lower at about 1,256 metres, reaches around 30 °C in June. The catch in high summer is rain: July and August are the wettest months, with fog on the ridges and occasional landslides on the link roads.
Winter brings snow from December to February, and in recent winters the heaviest falls have come in late January and February. Snow is a reason to go, but it also closes roads: in February 2026 the Abbottabad administration shut the Nathia Gali road to tourists after more than a foot of snow. The Kaghan valley runs on a shorter clock. In December 2025 the Mansehra administration closed Naran and everything beyond Kaghan town to visitors until the next season, and the road reopened only at the end of April 2026, with the Lake Saiful Muluk track later still and the Babusar Pass on 25 May. Hotels in Naran close for the winter, so the real season is late April to November, and the settled months are June to September. In winter, Shogran and Balakot in the lower valley stay open. Swat: two valleys in one
Lower Swat, around Mingora and Saidu Sharif at about 970 metres, is warm: June averages close to 30 °C across day and night. Its best months are March to May, when the orchards blossom and the river is green, and September to November, when the air clears. Winter is mild in the valley bottom, and the main winter draw is snow at Malam Jabba, at 2,804 metres. Snow cover there varies a lot from year to year; after heavy falls in January 2026, Malam Jabba was reported to have about 58 inches.
Kalam, at about 2,000 metres, is a summer place, averaging around 24 °C in July and just above freezing in January. June to September is the time for the lakes and meadows above it, from Mahodand to Utror, which snow closes in winter. Kalam itself stays open in winter for snow, though the road up from Bahrain, still damaged from the 2022 floods, is slow and icy. Dir and Kumrat
Kumrat, at the head of Upper Dir, is open in practice from around late May to October, and it is at its best from June to September, when the camps are up and the jeep tracks to Jahaz Banda and Badgoi are clear. Snow closes the valley above Thal in winter, and the Badgoi Pass to Kalam, at 3,523 metres, is usually passable only for a few summer months.
Summer here brings its own risk. In August 2024, floods washed away the road and bridges below Kumrat and some 200 to 250 tourists had to be rescued. In the wettest weeks, keep a spare day and check the road before you drive up from Dir.
Chitral
Chitral follows a different pattern from the rest of the north. It lies largely outside the monsoon, so its summers are dry: Chitral town, at about 1,500 metres, averages highs close to 36 °C in July, with barely any rain in June and July. The wettest month is March. That makes May to October the main season, with the Kalash valleys green in May and the higher valleys of Upper Chitral open from June.
Summer is not risk-free. In early August 2026, glacial lake floods and cloudbursts closed the Chitral to Peshawar highway and the Shandur road and cut off the internet. Winter is cold but not closed: the Lowari tunnel keeps the road in open all year, and the Kalash winter festival, Chaumos, falls in December, roughly from the 7th to the 22nd. The spring festival, Chilam Joshi, is in May.
Peshawar and the plains
Peshawar has long, very hot summers, with average June highs around 40 °C, and short, mild winters with January highs around 18 °C. Visit between October and March, when the old city, the bazaars and nearby Takht-i-Bahi can be explored on foot in comfort. Summer is only for those visiting family.
In 2026 security matters as much as season in parts of the province. Peshawar, Swat, the Dir districts and the road to Chitral all saw attacks or clashes this year and carry foreign travel warnings, and the southern districts, including Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu and Lakki Marwat, are not places for a holiday at present. The months to be careful with
- Late June to mid-September: the monsoon. In 2026 the monsoon began on 26 June, and by 11 September Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had recorded 74 of Pakistan's 183 monsoon deaths, more than any other province. Rivers rise within minutes after upstream rain, and landslides close the Kaghan road, the Kalam road and the Galiyat link roads. - December to February: heavy snow. The high valleys are shut, and the roads that stay open can close for days after a storm. Our guide to winter road closures in KPK lists what shuts and when.
- Eid and 14 August. The Galiyat, Naran and Swat fill up, room prices rise and the roads jam. If your dates are fixed, book early and leave before dawn.
Which month for which trip?
- Spring blossom and mild weather: lower Swat in March and April, Peshawar in March.
- High lakes and meadows: Naran, Kumrat and Kalam from late June to mid-September, keeping spare days for rain.
- A cool escape from the heat: the Galiyat in June, before the monsoon rain arrives in earnest.
- Culture and festivals: Chitral in May for Chilam Joshi, or in December for Chaumos.
- Autumn colour and quiet roads: Swat, Chitral and the Galiyat in October.
