Best Time to Visit Gilgit-Baltistan, Valley by Valley

The best time to visit Gilgit-Baltistan is from May to October, and June to September if you want everything open at once: the Deosai plateau, the Khunjerab Pass, the Babusar road and Fairy Meadows. April is the month for blossom in Hunza and Skardu, and October for autumn colour and clear skies. Winter suits only travellers who want snow and quiet, and who can live with closed passes and cancelled flights.

The right month depends on where you are going, because the valleys and the high country run on different calendars. Below is each place's window, then what roads, flights and crowds are like through the year.

Hunza and Gilgit: the longest season

Hunza has a long season, and there is no bad month to be there between April and October.

• April is blossom month. Apricot and cherry flower up the valley through the month, starting lower down around Gilgit and reaching the higher villages later. The high passes are still closed.
• May and June are green and fresh, with long days. The road to Khunjerab usually opens to visitors in early May.
• July and August are the busiest months. Gilgit is hot, with afternoons around 35°C, but Karimabad is higher and more comfortable. Everything is open, including the Khunjerab Pass.
• September is settled and clear, with fewer visitors once the school holidays end.
• October is when the poplars and orchards turn gold, peaking late in the month, and the air is at its clearest. Nights are cold.

Skardu, Shigar and Khaplu

The Skardu valley is a little lower than Karimabad and runs on much the same calendar as Hunza, though its winters are very cold.

• April brings apricot, peach and apple blossom to the orchards around Skardu, while Deosai is still under snow.
• May and June are mild and green, and good for Shigar and Khaplu before the summer crowds.
• July and August are warm, with Skardu afternoons around 31°C to 32°C, and this is the only time the whole trip, including Deosai, is open. It is also peak season for hotels.
• September and October are clear and quiet, with golden poplars along the Indus by late October.

If you want the valley sights but not Deosai, spring and autumn are the better value. If Deosai is the point of the trip, it has to be summer.

Deosai: a short summer window

Deosai, at an average of about 4,100 metres, is only accessible in summer, roughly June to September. Outside that window it is under snow.

• Late June is the start of the season, and snow can still lie on the higher ground.
• July to mid-August is the best time, with wildflowers across the plateau and marmots everywhere. It is also when most people go.
• September is quieter and colder, and the season ends as the first snows come.

Even in July, nights on the plateau are close to freezing, so bring proper warm clothes for a camping night. Summer storms matter here too: in July 2025, tourists stranded on Deosai during the floods had to be rescued. Our seven-day Skardu and Deosai tour is timed for the summer window.

Fairy Meadows and Nanga Parbat

The Fairy Meadows season runs from late spring to the end of September. June to September is the dependable window, when the jeep track from Raikot Bridge to Tato and the path up to the meadow are clear of snow.

• June is fresh and green, and quieter than high summer.
• July and August are the busiest months and carry the most risk from rain. Storms can damage the jeep track, and in late July 2025 four tourists were airlifted out of Fairy Meadows during the floods.
• September is usually drier and quieter, and a good month for the view of Nanga Parbat's Rakhiot face.

Treks: K2, Concordia and the base camps

The high treks are summer-only, because the glaciers, moraines and passes above 4,000 metres are snowbound for most of the year.

• K2 and Concordia: the trek up the Baltoro glacier from Askole takes four to five days to Concordia. K2 expeditions climb mainly in July and August, and most treks to Concordia run in the summer weeks around them.
• Rakaposhi base camp from Minapin, Nanga Parbat's Rupal face from Tarashing, and the base camp walk beyond Fairy Meadows are shorter treks for the same summer season.

Glacier travel carries real risk even in season, from crevasses, rockfall and sudden storms. Go with an experienced local guide, and treat the dates as a guide rather than a guarantee.

Roads and flights through the year

The Karakoram Highway is the only road in from Islamabad in winter and spring, and it is kept open all year. Landslides are the main risk: in spring after snowmelt and heavy rain (in March 2026 slides closed it between Pattan and Bursin), and in July and August from monsoon storms and meltwater.

The Babusar road through Naran, the shorter summer route to Chilas, opens in about late May or June and closes with the snow in November. In 2026 it reopened in late May. In July 2025 a flash flood on the Thak–Babusar stretch swept away vehicles and killed tourists, and the road was closed for about a week.

The Skardu road from Jaglot is open all year but vulnerable to rockfall and flood damage; in July 2026 it was closed until a temporary steel bridge was installed.

Flights to Gilgit, on PIA's small turboprops, need good visibility and are regularly cancelled in cloud, snow and rain, which makes winter and early spring the least reliable. Skardu takes jets, and in 2026 PIA, Airblue and AirSial were all flying the Islamabad route, so there are more seats to rebook onto. Whatever the month, keep a spare day and a road plan. Crowds, holidays and prices

The busiest weeks in Gilgit-Baltistan are the Eid holidays and the school summer holidays from June to August. Hotels in Hunza and Skardu fill up, prices rise, and the main roads and sights get crowded. Eid al-Adha now falls in May and moves about eleven days earlier each year, so for the next few years it lands at the start of the season.

September and October are quieter, cheaper and, for many people, the best months of all. Late April and May are quiet too, apart from Eid.

Which month should you choose?

• First trip, family or older parents: June or September. Everything is open, days are long, and you avoid the hottest and wettest weeks.
• Deosai is the main reason you are going: July or early August.
• Photographers: mid to late October for Hunza's colour, or April for blossom.
• K2 and the high treks: July and August.
• Tight budget or dislike of crowds: September and October, or May outside Eid.
• Snow and silence: January and February, with spare days built in.
