Ayun Valley is a large village and valley in Lower Chitral, on the road from Chitral town to the Kalash valleys, at the point where the Bumburet river meets the Chitral river. Sources give its distance from Chitral as anywhere between 12 and 23 km, and it is roughly a 30 to 60 minute drive depending on traffic and where you start. Most visitors pass through it on the way to Bumburet, Rumbur or Birir, and a smaller number stay a night.

Where is Ayun Valley?
Ayun lies south of Chitral town, on the Kalash valley road. It sits at the confluence of the Bumburet river and the main Chitral river, and the Bumburet river runs the length of the village, supplying irrigation, drinking water and electricity. The Bumburet and Birir valleys lie to the west, which is why Ayun is called the gateway to the Kalash valleys.
The distance is quoted inconsistently. The Pakistan High Commission page and some other sources say 12 km from Chitral town; Wikipedia says 23 km. Both are probably measuring to different parts of a spread-out village. What matters for planning is the time, which is well under an hour and a half in normal traffic.
How to get to Ayun
By shared vehicle. Shared jeeps and vans run from Chitral's central bus stand towards the Kalash valleys and stop at Ayun. Local reports give a shared seat at about PKR 100 and a whole car at about 600, but those figures are older, so ask before you get in.
By hired car or jeep. The simplest way, and the sensible choice if you are carrying luggage or going on to Bumburet. Our Chitral jeep rental guide explains how hire works.

What is there to see in Ayun?
Ayun does not have a monument you buy a ticket for. What it offers:
- The river confluence and the valley itself. A green, terraced stretch of orchards and fields at the foot of the Hindu Kush, worth a slow walk along the village lanes.
- Mountain views. Guests at a fort-style lodge in Ayun report views of Tirich Mir, which at 7,708 m is the highest peak of the Hindu Kush.
- The lodge itself. Ayun Fort Inn, a restored fort-style building with 14 rooms and gardens, is well rated on Tripadvisor and is a good example of the kind of stay on offer. Rates listed there are around USD 70 a night, which is roughly PKR 20,000, but check the current price.

Should you stay in Ayun?
Ayun works as a night when you want quiet and a shorter next-morning drive to the Kalash valleys. It is not the place to base a trip if your main interest is Chitral town's fort, mosque and bazaar, which are better done from a hotel in town. Is Ayun safe to visit?
Pakistani visitors do go to Ayun and the Kalash valleys, but the route needs care. The UK government advises against all travel on the N45 from Mardan to Chitral city, including the Kalash valleys, and against all travel to Swat, Upper and Lower Dir.
