Attabad Lake in winter is still easy to reach: the Karakoram Highway runs beside it through the tunnels all season, 30 to 40 minutes north of Karimabad in good conditions. In a cold year, large parts of the lake freeze in January, and people skate and play hockey on it. In a mild year much less of it freezes: in January 2026 it was only partly frozen, so treat the ice as a bonus rather than the reason for the trip.

When does Attabad Lake freeze?
The lake starts to ice over at the edges and in sheltered bays as December nights drop well below freezing. In a cold winter, the coldest weeks of January freeze large parts of it, and that is when the photographs of people walking and skating on a white lake are taken. By late February the ice is weakening in the afternoon sun.
It does not happen the same way every year. In January 2023 the lake was frozen enough to host a seven-day winter sports festival, with ice hockey, ice football and skating, and more than 300 athletes from ten districts of Gilgit-Baltistan, according to Dawn. Three years later the picture was very different: reports from Hunza in January 2026 described Attabad as only partly frozen, and the ice-hockey tournament usually held on a natural rink at Altit had to move north to Sost, where the ice was firmer but still thin in places.
Recent winters in the region have been two to three degrees milder than they used to be, with less snow, and the freeze starts later. If a frozen lake is the whole point of your trip, keep your dates flexible, ask a hotel in Gulmit or Karimabad what the ice is doing a week before you leave, and book somewhere you would be happy to be even if the water stays open.
Is the ice on Attabad Lake safe to walk on?
Sometimes, in some places, and you can't tell from the shore. Attabad was more than 100 metres deep when it formed, and the streams feeding it keep water moving under the ice, so a patch that looks like its neighbours can be much thinner.
The standard guidance used in cold countries, from the Canadian Red Cross, is a useful yardstick:
- 15 cm of clear, hard ice for one person to walk or skate on
- 20 cm for a group or a game of hockey
- Clear blue or black ice is the strongest; white, cloudy ice is about half as strong
- Grey ice means water is present, and you should not stand on it at all
On Attabad, a few local rules follow from that:
- Only go out where local people are already skating, and ask them how thick the ice is and how far it is safe to go.
- Keep away from stream mouths, the edges of open water and cracks, where ice is always thinnest.
- Stay off it after midday on sunny days and from late February, when the surface softens.
- Never drive or ride a motorbike onto the ice. There is no season in which that is a sensible idea here.
- Keep children at the edge and in reach. If someone goes through, don't run out after them; lie flat, reach with a scarf, a branch or a rope, and shout for help.
Skating, hockey and winter events
Ice sport in Hunza is homegrown, learned on frozen ponds and channels in Altit, Karimabad and the Gojal villages. Attabad has hosted government-backed winter festivals, like the one in 2023, while the best-known community event, Karakoram Winterlude, is based on a natural rink at Altit rather than on the lake.
Dates for these events are announced locally, often only a few weeks ahead, and they move or shrink when the ice is poor, as in 2026. If you want to watch a match, ask your hotel what is planned for the week you arrive.
On an ordinary winter day the lake is quiet. The boats are mostly laid up, the jet skis have gone and many lakeside cafés close for the season. What you get instead is dark water or white ice between mountains snow-covered to the shore.
Getting to the lake in winter
The Karakoram Highway from Karimabad and Aliabad north to the lake is the one road in Hunza that is reliably kept open all winter. It is paved and wide, and the five tunnels beside the lake keep much of that stretch out of the weather.
What changes in winter is the margin for error:
- Ice in the shade. The road can be dry in the sun and glazed on bridges and shaded bends, especially early in the morning.
- Short days. The sun drops behind the ridges early in the afternoon. Leave the lake well before dark.
- Snow and rockfall. A heavy fall can close the road for hours until it is cleared, and freeze-thaw can bring stones down. Ask at your hotel before setting out.
- The right vehicle. A normal car is manageable on the highway in a dry spell. After snow, a 4x4 with chains, or a local driver who knows the road, is the safer choice.

Staying on the shore in winter
A night beside the lake gives you the ice or the dark water at first light, which day visitors never see. It also means cold, isolation and depending on the hotel for everything.
The best-known resort, Luxus Hunza, has cottages and rooms on the shore and lists heating in its rooms. Pearl-Continental Attabad Lake opened on the shore in May 2026, so it has no track record for winter yet. Smaller hotels and guesthouses along the lake and in Shishkat and Gulmit vary a great deal, and some close for the season.
Before you book any lakeside room for December to February, ask:
- Is the hotel open on my dates? Confirm by phone a day or two before you arrive, not just on a booking site.
- What heats the room, and what happens in a power cut? Hunza's electricity drops sharply in winter; a room heated only by electric heaters is cold without a generator.
- Is there hot water in the morning, and is the restaurant serving? You will not want to drive out for dinner on an icy road at night.
If the answers are vague, stay in Karimabad, Aliabad or Gulmit instead, where there is more choice, and drive to the lake for the morning. Our guide to where to stay in Hunza compares the areas.
Never sleep with a gas heater or gas stove burning in a closed room. Turn it off, or leave a window open a crack.
Is Attabad Lake worth visiting in winter?
For photographers, couples and small groups of adults who like quiet, yes. You see the lake without crowds, the mountains are white to the water's edge, and on a still morning the scene is very different from the summer postcard. If you are already in Hunza in winter, the lake is an easy half-day out.
It is a poor reason on its own to travel to Hunza in January if what you really want is skating: the ice may not come, the boats won't be running, and the drive in is long and uncertain. Families with small children should think carefully too, as the lakeside cold is harsh and children will want to run onto the ice.
