Jeep rent in Astore depends on the route, the vehicle and the day you ask, and there is no official rate card. Published 2025 and 2026 figures put a one-way jeep from Astore to Deosai at roughly PKR 10,000 to 12,000, a day trip to Rama at somewhere between PKR 5,000 and 10,000, and a full day's hire at PKR 10,000 to 25,000 depending on the vehicle. Treat every number below as a starting point for a conversation, not a quote.
Every road past Astore town is a jeep road, so for most visitors the question is not whether to hire one but how to hire it well. This guide covers the fares sources report, what changes the price, what to settle before you get in, and how to compare a per-trip fare with a daily hire.

Why you hire a jeep in Astore
Astore is the last place on these roads where you can easily find a vehicle built for them. The track to Rama Meadows is steep and unpaved, the Rupal road to Tarashing is rough in places, and the Deosai road beyond Chilim is a high-altitude track that sources describe as poor and suitable only for 4x4. A normal saloon car is not the right tool for any of them.
Official Gilgit-Baltistan tourism material lists the main valleys as car or jeep roads. In practice, a jeep is what local drivers use and what operators insist on, and several guides say Deosai from the Astore side should not be attempted in a personal car at all. If you are driving your own 4x4, you can skip the hire for some routes, but many visitors still hire a local driver for Rama, because the track is narrow and passing is awkward.
What jeeps in Astore cost, route by route
Sources do not agree to the rupee, and almost none of them say how recent their figures are. These are the ranges that turn up most often. The ones from 2025 are marked; the others are older or undated and should be read as lower bounds.
| Route | Reported fare |
|---|---|
| Astore to Rama Meadows and Rama Lake, day trip | PKR 5,000 to 10,000 |
| Astore to Deosai, one way | PKR 10,000 to 12,000 (2025) |
| Astore to Sheosar Lake and back | PKR 18,000 to 22,000 (2025) |
| Full Deosai tour | PKR 22,000 to 30,000 (2025) |
| Astore to Rainbow Lake, Minimarg | PKR 26,000 to 28,000 |
| Chilam checkpost to Rainbow Lake | PKR 20,000 to 22,000 |
The Rama figure is the least settled. An older account quotes PKR 6,000 to 10,000 for the day, and a more recent one mentions about PKR 5,000, while warning that cheaper offers may turn out to be a car rather than a jeep. Ask exactly which vehicle is coming.
For Rupal and Tarashing, we could not find a current, reliable fare in any source, so we are not printing one. Ask two or three drivers and expect the price to sit between the Rama day trip and the Deosai fare, since the road is longer than Rama's but shorter than the Deosai run. The fares above are the kind of figures to hold in mind when a driver names a price.
Per-trip fare or daily hire?
Drivers quote in one of two ways, and the cheaper option depends on your plan.
Per-trip fares suit a single, defined run: Astore to Rama and back, or Astore to Deosai one way. You know what you are paying, and the driver knows when he is finished.
Daily hire suits several short stops or a loosely planned day. One guide says you should not expect to pay less than PKR 10,000 to 12,000 a day in Astore. A 2025 breakdown by vehicle gives these daily ranges:
- Open Willy-type jeep: PKR 10,000 to 15,000
- Toyota Land Cruiser: PKR 15,000 to 20,000
- Prado or Pajero: PKR 18,000 to 25,000
- Double cabin pickup: PKR 20,000 to 28,000
Those figures come from a Skardu-focused rental guide, so Astore prices may sit a little lower or higher. Use them to judge whether an offer is sane, not to expect an exact match.
What the price should cover
Most reported prices include the driver and fuel, but guides repeatedly advise confirming it before you book. Before you agree, settle these in plain words:
- The route and the end point. Say "Astore to Rama Meadows and back to Astore" rather than "Rama trip", so there is no argument about the lake or a side stop.
- Waiting time. If you will walk to Rama Lake and back, the driver waits at the meadow. Agree the hours.
- Fuel and driver's food. Some drivers include both; some expect tea and a meal.
- Number of passengers and luggage. A jeep seats a limited number comfortably, and luggage on the roof is a common reason prices rise.
- One-way versus return for Deosai. If you are crossing on to Skardu, say so. The driver then needs a return plan, which is usually why the Astore to Skardu through-fare is higher than a one-way hop.
If you want it in writing, write the amount and route on your phone and have the driver confirm it by message. It avoids most disputes later.
How to negotiate without a fight
Guides to Astore all say the final figure depends on bargaining, and they are right. A few habits help.
- Ask at the depot, not at the bus stop. The vehicles gathered near the lorry depot at the start of the Rama road are the local ones, and you can compare more than one quote in five minutes.
- Name your own number after two quotes. If three drivers say PKR 8,000 and one says PKR 15,000, you know who is guessing.
- Share the jeep. If you are two or three people, joining another group going the same way brings the per-head cost down. Ask the driver whether anyone else is going.
- Avoid peak days. Eid weeks and mid-summer weekends push prices up, because the supply of jeeps is limited, so expect to pay more. Midweek in June or September is easier. Our Astore trip cost guide shows how jeep hire fits into a whole-trip budget.
- Don't pay everything upfront. A small advance is normal; the balance belongs at the end of the run.
Roads, permissions and safety
Most Astore jeep runs are short, but they are on steep, unfenced tracks, so judge the driver as well as the price. Our note on jeep track safety in the northern areas covers what to watch for. In particular, avoid driving the high tracks after heavy rain, and do not push a driver to go on if he says a section is unsafe.
Minimarg and Rainbow Lake need extra care. The valley lies close to the Line of Control, and travellers have needed a No Objection Certificate from the Astore administration, with copies handed over at the Chilam checkpost before crossing Burzil Pass. One source reports that, from April 2025, no permit was required, but travel was only allowed to Chilam Chowki after 1 pm and beyond Minimarg after 5 pm. Rules like these are changed without much notice, so ask at the deputy commissioner's office in Astore before you set out and do not rely on a driver's word alone. Our Minimarg guide goes through the checkpoints and permission steps. Overnight stays on the Deosai plains also need a permission letter from the Deputy Commissioner of Astore, according to one guide.
Check the route to Astore. The Gilgit side is the usual approach. If you are coming from Islamabad by the Karakoram Highway, note that the UK government advises against all travel on the highway between Mansehra and Chilas, and anyone travelling on a foreign passport should read that advice, as it can void travel insurance. Babusar avoids that stretch in summer, and Gilgit-Baltistan itself is not on the UK list. Our Islamabad to Astore guide compares the routes. Pakistani visitors still travel to Astore, but check local news and police advice before leaving.
Who should hire what
- A first-time visitor for one day: hire for Rama Meadows by the trip. The distance is short, and you avoid paying for hours you won't use.
- A group doing Rama and Rupal over two or three days: a daily or multi-day hire with the same driver usually works out better and saves finding a new vehicle each morning.
- Anyone going on to Skardu through Deosai: compare the through-fare with the cost of two separate jeeps. Our Deosai jeep rent guide covers the Skardu side, and the Astore to Deosai route describes the road.
- Someone with their own 4x4: you may not need a jeep for Deosai, but ask locally about the day's road condition first.
