Wazir Bagh is a public garden on the south side of Peshawar, laid out from 1810 by Sardar Fateh Muhammad Khan Barakzai, known as Wazir, during the reign of Mahmud Shah Durrani. It is one of the city's two great old gardens along with Shahi Bagh, and it sits beside the royal Durrani graveyard. A refurbishment in recent years gave it renewed walking tracks, lawns, a women's corner and a cafeteria.
It is a quiet local park with real history behind it, best for an unhurried hour rather than a full outing. This guide covers the history, what is there now, timings, and whether it is worth including in a Peshawar day.

History of Wazir Bagh
Fateh Muhammad Khan Barakzai laid the foundation of the garden in 1810, after he ended Shah Shuja's rule in Peshawar. It was built during the reign of Mahmud Shah Durrani. The name comes from Fateh Muhammad Khan's own title, wazir, meaning minister. The Scottish traveller Sir Alexander Burnes visited in 1832 and recorded his impressions. The garden was a well-known stopping place for merchants travelling between the subcontinent, Afghanistan and Central Asia.
The original layout has four enclosures and included a pavilion, a mosque, lawns, a pond with fountains and many old trees. Reports describe fruit trees such as apricot, peach and pomegranate, and dense pipal trees that gave shade.
The Durrani graveyard
The royal Durrani graveyard lies next to the garden, in its southern part according to one report, and holds the tombs of members of the Durrani royal family. One is the tomb of Beejo Bibi, described as a mistress of Shah Taimur, son of Ahmad Shah Abdali.
It is a burial ground. Dress modestly, speak quietly and do not photograph people who are visiting graves.
What is there now
Local reports in 2024 described the gardens as run down, with rubbish, encroachment and lost trees, including the pipals. The province had already allocated PKR 100 million in 2020 for refurbishment under the "New Peshawar Old Charm" project. The work covered:
- The four main enclosures, including the pavilion and lawns
- Walking tracks and pavements
- The fountain pool
- A women's corner and a cafeteria

Timings and entry fee
Visitor listings give the hours as roughly 6 am to 9 pm every day. This is not from an official source, so ask at the gate. We found no confirmed entry fee, and one 2024 report suggested that charging one would help control access. Carry small cash and check at the entrance.
Best time to visit

Is it safe to visit?
The UK government advises against all travel to Peshawar, and 2026 has seen serious attacks on police in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including in September at Kohat. Foreign-passport holders should check their own government's advice, since it can void travel insurance. Pakistani visitors do use Peshawar's public gardens.

Wazir Bagh suits history readers, walkers, and anyone who wants a green space away from the bazaars. It is a poor choice if you want a maintained tourist attraction with guides and signage, and it is not a good stop for someone with only a few hours in the city.
