Skardu in summer, from June to August, is peak season and the only time you can do everything: Deosai is open, usually from some time in June, the valley is green and the days are long. It is also hot in town, with average afternoons of 29 to 32 °C and strong sun, and it is busy, above all in the school holidays, around Eid and on 14 August. Book flights and rooms early, plan sightseeing for mornings and evenings, and keep a spare day, because the monsoon brings floods and landslides to the roads in July and August.

What is Skardu like in June, July and August?
June is the gentlest summer month. The valley is fresh and green, the days are long and warm rather than hot, and the monsoon has not yet reached the mountains. Deosai usually opens during the month once the snow has been cleared, though in a heavy snow year that can slip towards the end of June. For most people it is the best summer month to visit.
July is full summer. Afternoons are at their hottest, the Deosai plateau is covered in wildflowers, and the school holidays fill the town. It is also the start of the monsoon, when storms over the mountains bring the highest risk of flash floods and road closures.
August is much like July, still hot and busy, with Independence Day crowds on 14 August and the flood risk continuing through the month. By the last week, as schools reopen, the valley begins to quieten.
How hot does Skardu get in summer?

These are Pakistan Meteorological Department averages for Skardu town, at about 2,230 metres. It is dry heat, and the nights cool down quickly, so sleeping is comfortable. The sun is the real issue: at this altitude it burns fast, and the pale sand at Katpana and the stony valley floor reflect it back at you.
Plan the day around it:
- Early morning for the lakes and walks. Kachura and Satpara are calm and cool before about 10 am.
- Rest from about noon to four. Eat lunch, stay indoors, and leave the long drives for the morning.
- Evening for the dunes and the bazaar. Katpana in the last hour of light, around 7 pm, then dinner in town.
Carry water in the car, wear a hat and sunglasses, and put sunscreen on children before you leave the hotel. And remember that Deosai, the same day, can be cold and windy at over 4,000 metres.
Deosai: the reason to come in summer
Summer is the only season you can reach the plateau, which averages about 4,114 metres. The track from Skardu climbs past Satpara Lake and over the Ali Malik Mar pass, and it is two to three hours by jeep to Bara Pani in the middle of the park. July is the month for wildflowers, and marmots are everywhere through the summer.
The rules have changed. Night camping was banned after a brown bear attacked a camper near Bara Pani in September 2025, and seasonal hotels and other commercial activity inside the park were banned from the 2026 season. Plan Deosai as a long day trip from Skardu, or as a crossing to Astore, and take food, water and warm clothes for everyone.
Arrange the jeep in Skardu a day or so before, through your hotel or a local operator, and leave early. Rain can close the track for a day or more even in high summer, so our guide to whether Deosai is open or closed explains how to check before you go.
When is Skardu most crowded?
The crowds follow the calendar in the rest of Pakistan:
- The school summer holidays, from about June to August, when families from Punjab and Sindh head north.
- Eid weekends. Eid ul-Adha moves about eleven days earlier each year; in 2027 it falls in mid-May, just before the season.
- 14 August, and the long weekend around it.
- Every summer weekend at the Kachura lakes and Katpana.
Muharram also shapes a summer trip. Skardu is a largely Shia town, and on the ninth and tenth of Muharram, which fall in mid-June in 2027, there are processions, tight security and most of the bazaar closes. Mobile services are often suspended in sensitive areas. Plan a quiet day in your hotel rather than a long drive or a flight.
Midweek in June, or the last week of August, gives you the summer weather with noticeably fewer people.
What to book early for a summer trip
- Flights. Morning flights to Skardu sell out around the holidays and the cheapest fares go first. In 2026, one-way fares from Islamabad ran from about PKR 13,000 on an early promotional fare to PKR 35,000 or more for a late summer booking. - Family rooms, which are the first to go in July and August.
- A car and driver, if you are not bringing your own, for the whole stay.
- Flexibility. Ask whether a booking can be moved if a flight is cancelled or a road closes. It is worth a slightly higher rate.
Prices rise in July and August and on holiday weekends. If you can travel in June or late August, you will usually pay less and find more choice.
Monsoon, floods and closed roads
Skardu itself gets very little rain in summer, about 9 to 12 mm a month on average. The risk is on the roads. July and August bring the fastest glacier melt and monsoon storms over the side valleys, and together they cause flash floods, glacial lake outbursts and landslides.
In early May 2026 the Pakistan Meteorological Department issued a glacial lake outburst flood alert for Gilgit-Baltistan, and the tourism department asked visitors to check road conditions and forecasts, avoid travelling in bad weather or after dark, and stay away from riverbanks and slide-prone slopes. In late July 2026 floodwater damaged the Jaglot–Skardu road and closed it for about five days, until a temporary steel bridge was put in.
Sensible summer habits:
- Keep a spare day at the end of the trip, whether you fly or drive.
- Drive in the morning. Glacier streams run highest in the afternoon, and storms tend to build later in the day.
- Never drive through water flowing across the road, and don't stop on the fan of a side stream.
- Stay off riverbanks and gravel bars, however calm the water looks.

Is summer the right time to visit Skardu?
Yes, if Deosai matters to you, or if school holidays decide your dates. It is the only season when one trip can take in the plateau, the lakes, Shigar and Khaplu, and the long days make everything easier.
