Islamabad to Skardu Flight: Fares, Airlines and Tips

The Islamabad to Skardu flight takes about an hour and is flown by PIA, Airblue and, since mid-2026, AirSial, with most departures in the morning. One-way fares in 2026 have ranged from around PKR 13,000 on an early promotional fare to PKR 35,000 or more for a late booking in peak season. The catch is the weather: Skardu flights are cancelled often enough that no trip should depend on the first one going.

That hour replaces two long days on the Karakoram Highway, and on a clear morning the view of Nanga Parbat from the window is worth the fare on its own. This guide covers who flies, what it costs, where to sit, why flights get cancelled, and how to book around it.

Which airlines fly Islamabad to Skardu?

Three Pakistani airlines fly the route. Schedules change with the season, so check each airline's own site, such as PIA's, before you plan around a particular departure.

In summer there are usually two or three flights a day between them; in winter there are far fewer. Skardu has been an international airport since December 2021, and PIA has run a seasonal Dubai–Skardu service, but for travellers from Pakistan the Islamabad route is the main way in.

If you are flying from elsewhere in the country, it is usually easier to connect in Islamabad than to wait for the less frequent direct flights from Lahore and Karachi.

How much does a flight to Skardu cost?

Fares on this route move a lot with the date and how early you book. As a rough guide from booking-site prices in 2026:

• Cheapest one-way fares, booked well ahead or on a sale: roughly PKR 13,000 to 20,000.
• Typical one-way fares a few weeks out in summer: roughly PKR 20,000 to 35,000.
• Late bookings for peak dates, such as Eid, the June–August school holidays and long weekends: PKR 35,000 or more one way, especially on PIA.
• Return tickets priced in September 2026 for travel a week or two later came to about PKR 50,000 on Airblue and PKR 80,000 or more on PIA.

These are indications, not quotes. Prices change daily, and PIA, Airblue and AirSial each price differently.

A few things push the price up or down:

• Book early for June to August. Seats on morning flights sell out around the holidays, and the cheapest fare classes go first.
• Compare all three airlines on the same date. The gap between them can be large.
• Read the baggage rules for your fare. Cheaper fare types can include less checked baggage. If you are bringing warm clothes for Deosai, camera gear or trekking kit, the extra baggage fee can wipe out the saving.
• Flexibility is worth paying for. A fare that can be changed without a large penalty is worth a little more on a route where cancellations are routine.

Which side to sit for Nanga Parbat and K2

On a clear day, this is the flight's reason for fame. The route passes Nanga Parbat, at 8,126 metres the ninth-highest mountain in the world, and the view of it is the best part of the hour.

• Islamabad to Skardu: sit on the right. Nanga Parbat appears on the right-hand side of the aircraft, sometimes almost straight ahead of the window.
• Skardu to Islamabad: sit on the left. The same view, from the other side.
• K2 and the Karakoram are sometimes visible from the other side (left going up), far off and often in cloud. Unless you know the peaks well, they are hard to pick out.

Ask for a window seat on the correct side when you check in, and check in early to get one. On a cloudy day you will see nothing, and that is just how the route works.

Why do Skardu flights get cancelled?

Skardu sits in a deep valley among very high mountains, and flights need good visibility and settled weather both along the route and at the airport. When cloud comes down or the forecast is doubtful, flights are delayed or cancelled, often at short notice on the day itself.

Cancellations can happen in any month, but the pattern is fairly consistent:

• Winter (December to February) has the fewest flights and the most cancellations.
• Spring brings unsettled weather. In April 2025, bad weather grounded eight flights in and out of Skardu, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.
• Summer is the most reliable season for flying, but monsoon cloud can still ground flights, particularly in July and August.
• Other disruptions happen too. In May 2025 PIA cancelled a string of northern flights, including one to Skardu, at short notice, while a private airline's flight went ahead.

When a flight is cancelled, the airline will usually move you to the next available flight, but in busy periods that can be a day or more away. That is why every Skardu plan needs slack.

How to book so a cancellation doesn't ruin the trip

Build the plan around the chance of a cancellation rather than hoping it won't happen.

1. Book the earliest flight of the day. Morning weather is usually more settled, and if it is cancelled you have the rest of the day to rearrange.
2. Keep a spare day at the end. Never book an onward connection, an international flight or a work meeting for the day you fly out of Skardu. We build a spare day into our own Skardu and Deosai trip for exactly this reason.
3. Put the fixed days in the middle. Deosai, Khaplu or a night at a particular hotel are easier to protect if they are not on your arrival or departure day. Our 5-day Skardu itinerary is built this way.
4. Buy a changeable fare, or at least know what a change will cost before you book.

6. Keep the airline's number and the booking reference on your phone and on paper. Signal and data can be patchy.

On the day: check-in and arriving in Skardu

Carry your original CNIC; children need their B-Form. Foreign nationals need a passport with a valid visa. Aim to be at Islamabad airport about two hours before departure. Domestic check-in closes earlier than many people expect, and window seats on the right-hand side go quickly.

Skardu airport is at about 2,230 metres, on the valley floor west of the town, between Skardu and the Kachura lakes. The drive into town takes around 20 to 30 minutes. Most hotels will arrange a pick-up if you ask when you book, which saves negotiating at the airport after a morning start.

You arrive at a little over 2,000 metres, which most people barely notice. Even so, keep the first day easy, drink plenty of water, and leave Deosai, at over 4,000 metres, until you have had a night or two in Skardu.

Is flying to Skardu worth it?

Fly if your trip is a week or less. Driving takes two full days each way; flying gives you those four days back in Skardu, and on a clear morning the flight is a highlight in itself. It is also the better choice for families with small children and for older parents who would find the long drive hard.

Drive if you have nine days or more, are four or five people sharing a car, want your own vehicle in Skardu, or cannot afford to lose a day to a cancellation with no fallback. The road has its own delays, but it is more predictable than the flight.
