Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Park is a large public park at Boat Basin in Clifton, Karachi, with flower beds, a fountain, a jogging track and a children's play area. Listings give hours from about 6 am to midnight, though sources differ, and visitors describe it as a family and couples park that is uneven in upkeep. It sits next to the Boat Basin food street and close to Dolmen Mall, which is why many people drop in on the way to dinner.

This guide covers where it is, what is in it, the hours and fee question, what reviewers report, and when it is worth the stop.

What is Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Park?

The park was developed by the Karachi Development Authority in the 1960s as the park at Boat Basin, according to Wikipedia. It was renamed in 2010 after Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan's first woman prime minister; "Shaheed" means martyr. Many Karachiites still call it Boat Basin Park, and that is the name to give a ride-hailing driver.

It is not on the open sea. It lies by the Boat Basin area and a creek channel, and a review on Tripadvisor says the creek water has dried to mud in places. Clifton Beach and the sea promenade are nearby, but the park is not itself a beach. If you came for the sea, plan a separate stop.

What is inside?

Descriptions on city guides agree on the main features:

  • A fountain surrounded by flower beds, usually the first thing visitors photograph.
  • A jogging track, praised by reviewers as one of the better ones in the area.
  • A children's play area with rides.
  • Lawns and manicured sections used for picnics and exercise.

The park has also hosted events. Reviewers recall the Karachi Eat festival there in 2018; see our Karachi Eat Festival guide for what that event is.

Timings and entry

Timings differ by source: about 6 am to midnight is the most common figure, another listing says 4 am to 11 pm, and a third says always open. Treat all of them as approximate and arrive by evening rather than late at night.

Entry is the unclear part. Some visitors say there is no formal ticket system and that money is sometimes collected without a ticket, while another describes the fee as normal. We cannot give a price. Carry small notes, ask what the charge is before paying and ask for a ticket.

What do visitors say?

Reported on Tripadvisor, where the park is rated about 3.6 out of 5:

  • Good: a well-designed layout, the jogging track, and suitability for couples and families.
  • Poor: a smell from the creek, patchy grass, broken side walls, and poor lighting in places.
  • Crowds: busiest in the evening and at weekends, and during events.

One reviewer wrote that it is for couples and families rather than people on their own. That echoes how most Karachi parks are used, but conditions change and these are visitor opinions, not inspection results. A 2018 performance audit mentioned in Wikipedia found a high-rise plaza had been built on land set aside for parking in the park. The park has therefore been under pressure from development.

How to fit it into a day

Boat Basin is a natural combination. In the morning, walk or jog before the heat; in the evening, take the park first and eat afterwards. Our guide to the Boat Basin food street covers dinner, and the Karachi parks overview compares it with other parks. Families can see more options in places to visit in Karachi with family, and Dolmen Mall is a short drive away for a cool break.

The Clifton heat and humidity are heavy for much of the year, so go early or after sunset. Take a ride-hailing car to avoid parking trouble near Boat Basin on busy nights.

Who is it for?

It suits families with small children, joggers and anyone who wants a large green space in Clifton without leaving the area. Skip it if you expect a pristine seafront park or have a short Karachi trip: the old city, museums and beaches give more for a first visit. Karachi's Clifton is not covered by the UK's list of no-go areas, but check our Karachi safety guide and stay in lit, busy parts after dark.
