Shah Alam Market, also spelled Shah Alami, is Lahore's biggest wholesale market, a dense grid of old lanes at the Walled City's Shah Alami Gate, next to Mayo Hospital. It is wholesale first and retail second. Shops sell to traders by the dozen, and many will also sell single items, at a price that depends on how you ask. It is a place to visit with a plan rather than to wander.
It is also one of the few places in Lahore where the layout itself is the challenge: more than 25 separate bazaars sit inside it, and each specialises in one kind of goods.

What is Shah Alam Market?
The gate takes its name from a Mughal emperor, Shah Alam I, son of Aurangzeb, and was one of the thirteen gates of the old city; it was earlier called Bherwala Gate. It was destroyed in the 1947 partition riots, and the area, mostly Hindu-owned before that, was rebuilt as a commercial district. The gate no longer stands, but the name stayed. Wholesale versus retail
Most shops sell in bulk, and prices are lowest when you buy by the dozen, carton or set. Many will still sell one or two of an item, but the price per piece is usually higher, and some shopkeepers refuse small orders when busy.
- Asking for the "wholesale rate" gets a per-dozen or per-carton price. Confirm the quantity that price needs.
- Ask what a single piece costs, then compare. If the gap is small, buy singly.
- Say if you are buying for a shop only if that is true. Do not claim to be a trader.
The bazaars inside
The names most often listed are Pappar Mandi, Rang Mahal, Bottle Bazaar and Sarafa Bazaar, the goldsmiths' lane. Reported goods include cosmetics, stationery, crockery and kitchenware, electrical items, watches, perfume, toys, baby clothes, bags and packaging. Wander in, note prices, then go back to buy.
Do not rely on a fixed map from an online list. Ask shopkeepers for the bazaar you want, and note landmarks on the way in, because the lanes are narrow and similar.
Timings and Sunday
Published hours vary. One listing gives 10 am to 2 pm, another 9 am to 7 pm, and reports on Sunday disagree: some say most shops close, others say part of the market trades and a Sunday flea market operates in the morning. The safest plan is to go on a weekday, arrive by late morning, and finish by mid-afternoon. If you must go on a Sunday, call a shop first.
Getting there and moving around
Ride-hailing is the easiest way to reach the Shah Alami Gate area, and the market is beside the Mayo Hospital entrance. Drivers may not enter the lanes, so expect to walk the last stretch. Parking is limited. Our guide to how to get around Lahore covers the options.

Prices are negotiable, especially for larger quantities. Start well below the first quote, keep the ask consistent, and be ready to walk away. Compare at least two or three shops. Check quality before paying, since wholesale goods are rarely returned. Get a receipt if the order is large.

The market is very crowded and pickpockets work the lanes. Carry little cash, keep your phone secure, and do not leave bags unattended. The area also has old buildings and tight passages. Note where the wider exits are, and avoid going at the busiest hours.
