Ratti Gali Lake vs Patlian Lake: Which to Choose

Ratti Gali Lake is the easier, busier and better-known choice; Patlian Lake sits higher, sees far fewer visitors, and takes longer to reach. If you only have time for one high lake on a Neelum Valley trip, the choice usually comes down to how much rough travel you want and whether you would rather have company at the top or have the place largely to yourselves.

Getting there: the routes compared

Ratti Gali Lake is reached from Dowarian, the village where the paved road ends and jeeps take over for the roughly 19 km track to the base camp, followed by a hike or horse ride of anywhere from 40 minutes to two hours depending on fitness and whether the trail is dry. Patlian Lake starts further up the valley, from Lawat near Jagran and Athmuqam. The jeep track from there is longer, around 40 km, and rougher, typically taking three to four hours to the base camp before a shorter final hike of about 45 minutes. Fewer operators and fewer tourists use this route, so arranging a jeep can take more planning and asking around locally.

Altitude and difficulty

Patlian Lake sits noticeably higher than Ratti Gali, close to 3,900–3,950 metres against Ratti Gali's roughly 3,683 metres. Both trips gain a lot of height quickly by jeep, so altitude headaches and breathlessness are possible at either, but they are more likely, and often more pronounced, at Patlian's greater height. Neither final hike is technically difficult, but both are done at altitude on rough ground, so fitness and pace matter more than technical skill.

Crowds and atmosphere

This is where the two lakes differ most. Ratti Gali is well known and sees a steady stream of jeeps and day-trippers through the summer, especially at weekends, which brings a livelier, more sociable atmosphere but less solitude at the lake itself. Patlian Lake, being harder to reach and less publicised, draws far fewer visitors, so groups that make it up there often have long stretches of the shore to themselves. If quiet matters more to you than convenience, that difference is the deciding factor.

Facilities and support

Ratti Gali's popularity means more infrastructure around it: a reliable supply of jeeps from Dowarian, guest houses in the village, and other travellers on the trail if something goes wrong. Patlian Lake has less of this. Base camp facilities are more basic, and with fewer people on the route, you are more reliant on your own preparation and whoever you have arranged as a driver or guide.

Which should you choose?

Choose Ratti Gali Lake if this is your first high lake in Neelum Valley, you want a more predictable jeep and hike, or you are travelling with a mixed group that includes less experienced hikers. Choose Patlian Lake if you have already done Ratti Gali or a similar trip, want a quieter, more remote experience, and are comfortable with a longer, rougher jeep ride and less certainty around logistics.

The Ratti Gali jeep track in particular has had serious accidents in the past, so however you choose, use an experienced local driver, avoid an overloaded jeep, and check current road conditions locally before setting out. Neither trip suits young children, anyone unwell, or a first day in the valley before you have had time to adjust to altitude.

Is Neelum Valley safe to visit?

Both routes lie within the section of Azad Kashmir close to the Line of Control that the UK government's Pakistan travel advice currently advises against all travel to. Pakistani travellers visit both lakes regularly. Foreign passport holders should check their own government's current advice before planning a trip, since it can affect travel insurance, and everyone should check local conditions before setting out.
