- PTDC Motel Skardu, in Skardu city, with views toward the Indus and Kharpocho Fort.
- PTDC Motel Khaplu, in Khaplu town, roughly three hours from Skardu, near the Khaplu Palace.
- PTDC Motel, Rama Lake, above Astore, used mainly by people heading toward Rama meadows and Nanga Parbat viewpoints.
- PTDC Motel Sost, near the last town before the Khunjerab checkpoint, useful for an early start to the pass.
- PTDC Motel Gupis and PTDC Motel Phandar, along the Gilgit-Shandur road, both useful stops for anyone travelling that way rather than back down the Karakoram Highway.
Not every one of these operates year-round. Motels at higher altitude, such as Rama Lake, close for winter, and standards vary noticeably between the larger city motels and the smaller valley ones.

PTDC does not run a single modern online booking system the way private hotel chains do. The most reliable route is to check current rates and availability on the official PTDC site, tourism.gov.pk, and then confirm directly with the motel or PTDC's regional office by phone, since availability and contact numbers do change. If you are already on the road, most PTDC motels will also take a booking or a walk-in on the day, though this is risky in peak season (June to August, and around Eid) when rooms fill early.
If a tour operator is arranging your trip, ask them to confirm the PTDC booking as part of the itinerary rather than assuming it is held, since these motels do not always show live availability the way private hotels do.
What to expect on arrival
PTDC motels are functional rather than stylish: plain twin or double rooms, a restaurant on site (sometimes the only sit-down option in a small stop like Sost or Phandar), and hot water that can be limited outside peak hours in the smaller properties. Staff are used to a mixed crowd of tour groups, government travellers and independent tourists.
What they consistently get right is location. PTDC Motel Skardu and PTDC Motel Khaplu, for example, sit closer to their town's main sights than many private alternatives, and the Rama Lake, Gupis and Phandar motels are useful precisely because there is little else nearby.
Bring your CNIC for check-in, as with any hotel in the region, and carry cash; card facilities are not something to rely on outside the larger city properties.
PTDC motels versus private hotels
A PTDC motel makes sense when you want a known, government-run standard in a town with few other options, or when the location itself is the reason to stay (Rama Lake, Phandar, Sost). In Karimabad, Skardu city or Khaplu, where private guesthouses and hotels have multiplied over the last decade, you will usually find more choice and better value outside PTDC, particularly at the mid and upper end.
