Peshawar to Kumrat Valley runs east onto the M-1, north on the Swat Motorway to Chakdara, then up the N-45 through Timergara towards Dir before dropping into the Panjkora valley to Thal, the last village before the forest. Plan on six to seven hours of driving before you even reach the jeep track, most of it on the slow, winding final stretch rather than the motorway section.

The route stage by stage
- Peshawar to Nowshera, a short run on the M-1.
- Nowshera to Chakdara, on the Swat Motorway (M-16), which cut this leg down to about an hour on a clear run.
- Chakdara to Timergara, roughly 40 km on the N-45, with Chakdara Fort and the Dir Museum worth a stop if you have time to spare.
- Timergara towards Dir, continuing north through Lower into Upper Dir.
- The Kumrat turn-off, short of Dir town, where the road drops off the N-45 into the Panjkora valley towards Sheringal.
- Sheringal to Kalkot to Thal, the slowest section, a narrow valley road along the river.
- Thal onward, by hired jeep only, into the forest and towards Kala Chashma.
How long it actually takes
The motorway section from Peshawar to Chakdara is the easy part, around two hours in normal traffic. What takes the time is the run from Chakdara to Thal: budget four to five hours for it, even though the road looks short on a map, because the valley stretch beyond the Dir turn-off is narrow, winding and slower than its distance suggests. In total, allow six to seven hours of driving from Peshawar to Thal, plus another hour or two by jeep if you are going on into the forest.
Leave early. A start after mid-morning from Peshawar risks reaching the roughest part of the road, Sheringal to Thal, later in the day than is comfortable.

Driving this route yourself versus hiring a car
An ordinary car manages the drive to Thal in dry weather, and plenty of families from Peshawar do it in their own vehicles. What matters more than the car is a driver who is not doing the whole route on no sleep, since the last two to three hours are the ones that need attention. If you would rather not drive the valley section yourself, cars with local drivers can be hired in Chakdara or Timergara for the onward leg.
Is this route safe?
The UK government's Pakistan travel advice, updated 22 September 2026, advises against all travel to Lower Dir and Upper Dir, which this route runs through for its second half. On 16 July 2026, militants attacked a police search operation in the Laram Top area of Lower Dir, near this road, killing three officers and injuring fifteen. Pakistani travellers still make this drive to Kumrat through the summer season, but check current local news and police advice before you leave, and if you hold a foreign passport, check your own government's advice, since it can affect travel insurance.
