Neel Fari Lake is a high alpine lake in the Pir Panjal mountains above Forward Kahuta, the headquarters of Haveli District in Azad Kashmir. Reaching it means driving to the village of Bashan, then walking for two to three hours up to the lake and the meadow around it. It sits at a serious altitude, by some local estimates around 3,650 metres, and it is one of the least developed lake hikes covered on this site.

Where is Neel Fari Lake?
Neel Fari, also known locally as Sar Lake, lies in the mountains above Forward Kahuta, which is itself the district headquarters of Haveli, one of the newer districts of Azad Kashmir, formed in 2009. The district sits between the towns of Poonch and Uri, close to the Line of Control, and Forward Kahuta has long been a strategically important spot in that stretch of the border, changing hands more than once since 1947.
That location is exactly what makes the lake worth the trip: high meadows and clear water with very few visitors compared with better-known lakes elsewhere in the north, at the cost of a long approach and more border formality than most trips need.
Getting to Forward Kahuta
From Islamabad or Rawalpindi, the usual route runs south on Murree Road, through Murree, down to Kohala Bridge, and on into Azad Kashmir towards Bagh, before continuing to Forward Kahuta. The whole drive covers roughly 200 km and typically takes six to seven hours, given the winding mountain roads for most of the way; treat this as an estimate that can lengthen with traffic, weather or roadworks.
Forward Kahuta is also reachable from Bagh, about 65 km away, which is a reasonable link if you are combining Neel Fari with other stops in Bagh District. There is a DHQ hospital, a local bazaar and basic guesthouses in the town, the last real services before heading further into the mountains.
The drive to Bashan and the hike to the lake
From Forward Kahuta, the road to Bashan takes about an hour by car or motorbike. This is a narrower mountain road than the one you'll have just driven, so allow more time than the distance suggests, and don't attempt it in an ordinary saloon car if the surface is wet.
From Bashan, the lake itself is reached on foot, a hike of two to three hours through meadow and mountainside. The path climbs steadily rather than technically, but the altitude and the length of the walk make it a proper day's effort rather than a stroll, and there is little to nothing in the way of facilities once you leave Bashan. Carry all the water and food you need for the round trip.
The reward at the top is a lake set in open, flower-covered meadow, with mountains around it on most sides. It is quiet by the standards of Pakistan's better-known lakes, and that is largely the point of coming this far.
Camping at Neel Fari
Camping is possible near the lake and the surrounding meadow, and is how many visitors who make the effort to get here choose to spend the trip, rather than walking up and back in a single long day. If you plan to camp, come properly equipped: this is high, exposed ground with no shelter, shops or mobile signal, and nights are cold even in the middle of summer.
Don't camp alone, tell someone in Bashan or Forward Kahuta your plan and expected return, and take everything you carry in back down with you.

Checkpoints, documents and the current situation
Pakistani citizens need only their CNIC to travel here. Foreign nationals need a No Objection Certificate to enter the belt close to the Line of Control, and Forward Kahuta and the country around it sit inside or close to that belt, so this is not a spontaneous add-on to a trip for anyone travelling on a foreign passport. It offers something the more accessible lakes in Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan can't: real solitude, at the cost of real effort to get there.
It is not a good choice for a first mountain trip, for families with young children, or for anyone short on time, given the drive alone can take most of a day before the hike even starts.
