Sudhan Gali sits at around 2,100 metres in Bagh District, high enough that its weather is noticeably colder and wetter than Bagh town below it, and different from Islamabad or Murree even on the same day.

Winter (December to March): closed by snow
This is the season to avoid unless you specifically want snow. Sudhan Gali's elevation means winter snowfall is heavy; aid agencies working in the area after the 2005 earthquake recorded roughly 12 feet of snow falling on the surrounding hills in a normal season. Roads up from Bagh can become difficult or impassable for ordinary cars, guesthouses run on reduced staff and stock, and the Ganga Choti trail is under deep snow and not a route for casual walkers. If you do come in winter, check the road status in Bagh before setting out and don't attempt the summit trek.
Spring (April to May): thaw, mud and leftover snow
As the snow starts to melt, the road usually reopens properly and the meadows around Sudhan Gali turn green. Expect mud on unpaved sections and patches of old snow higher up, especially on the Ganga Choti trail in April. By May conditions are usually walkable, though the very top of the peak can still hold snow into the month. Days are mild, nights are still cold.
Summer (June to September): the main season
June through September is when most people visit and when the Ganga Choti trail is at its clearest. Days are pleasantly warm rather than hot, given the altitude, and nights need a jacket. July and August bring the monsoon: expect afternoon cloud, spells of rain, and occasional low fog that can close in quickly on the ridge above the town. Mornings tend to be clearer than afternoons in these two months, which is one reason walkers heading for Ganga Choti often start early. Autumn (October to November): clear but cooling fast
October is often the most reliably clear month, with the monsoon cloud gone and good visibility on the trail and from the ridge. Temperatures drop steadily through the month and nights turn properly cold. By November, snow can start to return to the higher ground around Ganga Choti, and the window for an easy summit walk narrows. Late November onward, treat conditions as winter again.
Fog and cloud on the trail
Because Sudhan Gali and Ganga Choti sit high enough to catch cloud directly, fog is a real factor even outside the monsoon months, particularly in the afternoon. It reduces visibility on the ridge and can make the return walk disorientating if you don't know the path. The practical response is the same one guides in the area give for any high walk here: start early, aim to be off the exposed ridge before early afternoon, and don't push on if cloud closes in fast.
Is it safe to travel here?
Azad Kashmir had serious unrest in 2026, with Joint Awami Action Committee protests from June causing over 50 deaths by some counts and long communications shutdowns; the AJK government asked tourists to stay away for a period. The UK currently advises against all but essential travel to most of Azad Kashmir, though Bagh District is not on the Line of Control itself.
