A Nathia Gali day trip from Islamabad works if you leave by 7 am, choose one walk, and start back by mid-afternoon. The plan below does exactly that: about two and a half hours up, the Pipeline Track from Dunga Gali through the forest, lunch in Nathia Gali, a short walk up to the old church, and the drive home before dark. It is easiest midweek; on summer weekends, at Eid and after snow the drive alone can take most of the day.
The trick is not to fit everything in. A day trip gives you five or six hours on the ground, enough for one good walk and an unhurried lunch, and that is the day this plan is built around.

The day, hour by hour
- 7:00 am: leave Islamabad. Take the Bhara Kahu bypass and the Murree Expressway. Leaving at 7 rather than 9 is the single biggest difference between a good day and a bad one.
- 8:15 am: past Murree, onto the Galiyat road. Keep going; save the tea stop for the hills.
- 9:30 am: Dunga Gali. Park, pay the small entry ticket for the Pipeline Track, and have tea at the stalls if you need it.
- 9:45 am: walk to Ayubia. The Pipeline Track runs about 4 km through deodar and pine forest along the hillside, almost level the whole way. At an easy pace it takes an hour to an hour and a half.
- 11:00 am: tea at Ayubia, then walk back to Dunga Gali. If you have a driver, have him meet you at Ayubia instead and save the walk back.
- 12:30 pm: lunch in Nathia Gali, a 3 km drive from Dunga Gali. Park once, near where you eat.
- 1:45 pm: St Matthew's Church. A short walk up from the bazaar to the old wooden church from the British period, with views over the forest towards Kashmir.
- 3:00 to 3:30 pm: start back. You should be in Islamabad by about 6 pm on a normal day.

Why this walk?
The Pipeline Track is the right walk for a day trip because it asks for no climbing and fits neatly into a morning. It suits almost everyone, from small children to grandparents, and it gets you into real forest within ten minutes of the car.
If your group is fit and wants a summit, swap it for Mushkpuri Top, which also starts from Dunga Gali. The day changes:
- Start the climb by 9:30 am, reach the top around 11:30, and be back down by about 1 pm.
- Have a later lunch in Dunga Gali or Nathia Gali, skip the church, and still leave by 3:30.

Where to have lunch
Nathia Gali is the place for lunch: it has the most choice, from simple restaurants and tea stalls along the bazaar to the restaurants in some of the larger hotels. Dunga Gali has fewer places but is quieter.
A few things make lunch easier:
- Eat early. By 12:30 you are ahead of most of the day-trippers who left Islamabad later than you did.
- Park once. The Nathia Gali bazaar road jams easily, and a space near the restaurant is worth more than a better restaurant further along.
- If you want a hotel restaurant, ring ahead to check it serves walk-in guests at lunchtime.
- Carry snacks and water for the walk. There are stalls at both ends of the Pipeline Track, but nothing in between.

The day trip by season
May and June. The best season for a day trip: warm, dry and long days. Weekends are busy, so go midweek if you can.
July to mid-September. The monsoon. Mornings are often clearer than afternoons, so the early start matters even more. Walk in the morning and expect rain after lunch. Landslides can close the road after heavy rain, so check the news the night before and again in the morning.
Mid-September to November. Quiet, clear and cool: the pick of the year for a weekday trip. Days shorten in November, so start back by 3 pm.
December to February. A day trip for snow is possible, but only on the right day. Go a day or two after a snowfall, once the main road is cleared, and never while snow is falling. After heavy snow the district administration has stopped tourists entering the Galiyat, as it did twice in early 2026. It is dark by around half past five, so leave the hills by 2:30 pm. Day trip or overnight?
A day trip suits you if you live in Islamabad or Rawalpindi, can go on a weekday, and want a walk and fresh air rather than a holiday. Midweek in October, it is one of the best days out near the capital.
It is a poor trade on a summer Saturday or an Eid holiday, when you can spend five or six hours in traffic for three hours in the hills. On those days, either go somewhere closer, such as the Margalla Hills or Murree, or stay the night in Nathia Gali and drive at quieter times.
