Murree Day Trip from Islamabad: A Timed Plan

A Murree day trip from Islamabad works if you leave by 7 am and are prepared to be back in the car by mid-afternoon. Leave later, especially on a weekend, and the day becomes mostly traffic: the road up is only an hour and a half in clear conditions, but the queue at the toll plaza and the hunt for parking once you reach Murree can eat far more time than the drive itself.

This guide sets out a timed plan for the day, what realistically fits into it, where to park, and how to avoid losing the afternoon to a jam.

A timed plan for the day

This is built around a weekend or holiday departure, when the roads are busiest. On a quiet weekday, shift everything half an hour later and you will still beat the crowds.

1. 6.45 to 7 am: leave Islamabad. Fill the tank before you go; there is no need to stop for fuel again until you are on the way home. The road out runs through Bhara Kahu, which is the first slow stretch of the day even this early.

3. 8.30 to 9 am: park and start walking. Arriving before 9 gives you first choice of parking, before the day-trip crowd fills the plazas near the Mall.
4. 9 am to midday: Mall Road and one viewpoint. Walk the Mall, then Kashmir Point or Pindi Point, whichever suits the light: Kashmir Point is better in the morning, Pindi Point better later in the day for the view towards the plains.
5. Midday to 1 pm: lunch. Eat off the busiest stretch of the Mall rather than on it, both for value and to avoid the lunchtime crowd.
6. 1 to 3 pm: a second stop, if there is time. Patriata, about 15 km south-east, is the natural add-on if you started early enough; allow two to three hours including the drive, the queue for the chairlift and time at the top. If the morning has already run late, skip it and use this window for the other viewpoint or a slower walk instead.
7. 3 to 3.30 pm: start back. Leaving by mid-afternoon puts you ahead of the Sunday-afternoon and holiday-evening rush, when everyone heads down from Murree at once.
8. 3.30 to 5 pm: the drive home, longer if the roads are busy.

Total time out of the house: roughly ten hours on a good day, more if traffic runs against you. That is a long day, and it is also the realistic shape of a Murree day trip once you account for parking and the crowd rather than just the drive.

What actually fits in a day

Two things fit comfortably: the town itself, meaning the Mall and one viewpoint, or the town plus Patriata, if you start early. Trying to add Bhurban or both viewpoints as well usually means rushing one of them or running late on the drive home, since each extra stop in Murree costs more in parking and traffic than the distance on the map suggests.

• Families with young children: the Mall and one viewpoint is enough for a relaxed day; add the play area at Pindi Point if the weather is fair.
• Couples or small groups with more energy: the Mall in the morning, Patriata in the afternoon, is the fuller version of the same day.

Where to park

Parking, not the drive, is what usually decides whether the day feels relaxed or rushed. Private vehicles are heavily restricted on the Mall itself and around GPO Chowk, so plan to park below or beside the centre and walk in; hotels and public plazas near the edge of the Mall handle most day-trip parking, and they fill first on a busy weekend. Arriving before 9 am, as in the plan above, is worth more to your day than almost anything else you can do, since it is the difference between a short walk from the car and a long circle looking for a space.

If you are heading straight to Patriata rather than the town centre, its own car park at the base station in Gulehra Gali is separate from Murree's, and reaching it does not require finding parking in town at all.

Avoiding the jams

The jams on a Murree day trip cluster in the same few places on every busy day, and each has a straightforward way round it.

• Bhara Kahu, on the way out of Islamabad. An early start is the only real fix; it is the first slow stretch of almost every trip, whatever time you leave.
• The Phulgran toll plaza. Busiest mid-morning at weekends. Passing through before 8.30 am avoids the worst of it.
• The final approach into Murree town. This is where a summer weekend trip can lose an hour or more, as traffic backs up looking for parking. Leaving early is again the main defence.
• The drive home in the late afternoon. Everyone leaves at roughly the same time, so leaving by 3 to 3.30 pm, ahead of the main wave, is worth more than any shortcut.

Check live traffic on Google Maps before you set off and again before you start back, as the Murree police themselves advise; the quicker route in the morning is not always the quicker one by evening. Is a day trip the right way to see Murree?

For a first look, or when time is genuinely short, yes: an hour and a half each way for a morning on the Mall and an afternoon at a viewpoint or Patriata is a fair trade, especially on a weekday. It is a poor trade on a summer Saturday with a late start, when five or six hours in traffic can leave you with three hours in Murree itself.
