Kharkhari Lake is a small glacial lake, about 400 metres long and 250 metres wide, near the head of Gabral valley in upper Swat, roughly 45 km northwest of Kalam. Visitors reach it by jeep along the valley track, followed by a walk of around 4 km on foot past waterfalls and glaciers to the water's edge. It has become one of the more popular summer outings from Kalam in recent years.

Where is Kharkhari Lake?
Kharkhari lies near the top of Gabral valley, which runs north from Gabral village, itself about 20 km beyond Utror and roughly 30 km from Kalam by road. From Kalam to the point where the jeep track ends below Kharkhari is about 45 km and roughly three hours' driving, on a track that gets rougher the further up the valley you go.
The drive and the walk
The route to Kharkhari has two distinct stages:
- By jeep from Gabral village, following the valley upstream past Shahi Bagh and on towards the head of the valley. This is a long, rough drive of around three hours from Kalam in total, and only high-clearance 4x4s with experienced drivers should attempt it.
- On foot for the final stretch, about 4 km once the track ends. The walk passes several waterfalls, glaciers and dense mountain vegetation before the lake comes into view.

Ask in Kalam, Utror or Gabral whether the track is passable to its usual end point before you go. Flood damage and washed-out crossings change the state of the road from year to year, and how far the jeep can actually take you varies with conditions on the day.
What to expect at the lake
Kharkhari's growing popularity has brought more visitors in recent summers, and local efforts have begun to address the litter and pressure that popularity brings. There is nothing built at the lake itself: no stalls, no boats, no permanent structures. It is a walk-in destination, and what you find is the lake, the surrounding peaks and, on a clear day, snow on the higher ground above.
- Start early from Kalam. Between the jeep drive and the walk, this is a full day out.
- Wear proper shoes for the final stretch. The path climbs and crosses rough ground.
- Take all your rubbish back with you. Growing numbers of visitors have put real pressure on this lake.
- Carry water and food. There is nowhere to buy either beyond Gabral village.
Camping
Some visitors camp near Gabral or at Shahi Bagh, further down the valley, rather than at the lake itself, and treat the last stretch to Kharkhari as a long day walk from there. There is no established camping infrastructure at Kharkhari itself, so anyone planning to sleep near the lake should go prepared and with a local guide.
When to go
- June to September is the reliable season for the drive and the walk. The track is at its most passable and the trail clear of snow.
- July and August bring monsoon rain, which can make both the jeep track and the final walk slippery, and can swell the streams you cross.
- Outside June to September, snow closes the upper valley and the trip is not something to plan around.
Is it safe to visit?
Pakistani visitors travel to Kalam and its side valleys, including Gabral, in large numbers every summer. On the immediate risks, the road and the river are the more pressing concerns: travel with an experienced local driver, and if the river rises or turns muddy, do not try to cross it.
On the wider security picture, Swat's situation worsened through 2026, with a suicide bombing at the Kabal police station near Mingora on 2 August that killed 17 people. Check local news and current police advice before setting out, particularly for the more remote valleys. The UK government advises against all travel to Swat, and overseas visitors should check their own government's advice, since ignoring it can affect insurance.
Is Kharkhari worth the trip?
If you have already seen Mahodand and want a longer, quieter day with a proper walk at the end of it, yes. The combination of a long jeep drive and a walk past waterfalls and glaciers makes it feel like more of an achievement than the shorter outings closer to Kalam.
