For tourists choosing between them, Lahore is the better city for history, architecture and a walkable old centre, and Karachi is the better one for the sea, for museums and colonial-era buildings, and for a sense of how large and mixed Pakistan is. If you only have time for one and it is your first visit, pick Lahore. If you have already seen the Mughal sights, or you want a beach and a warm winter, pick Karachi.
They are also far apart: about 1,020 kilometres by air, a flight of roughly an hour and three quarters with several airlines on the route. Most people who visit both fly between them rather than drive.

Sights and history
Lahore's centre of gravity is the old city: the Fort and Shalimar Gardens (both UNESCO sites), the Badshahi Mosque, Wazir Khan Mosque and the gates and lanes around them, most of which you can see in two days on foot and by short rides.
Karachi's sights are spread across a huge city. The main ones are the Mazar-e-Quaid, the mausoleum of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, completed in 1971; Frere Hall; Mohatta Palace in Clifton, a museum in a 1927 building; and the national and maritime museums. The sea
This is Karachi's clear advantage. Clifton, Sea View, and the beaches west of the city give you the Arabian Sea, which Lahore cannot match. Rules on swimming vary and the sea can be dangerous, particularly in the monsoon, so treat beaches as somewhere to walk and eat rather than to swim unless a local operator advises otherwise. Food
Both are famous, and people argue about it. Lahore is the classic answer for breakfast of halwa puri, tikka, karahi and sweets in the old city. Karachi's food reflects its migrant mix: biryani, nihari, seafood, burgers and street snacks such as those on Burns Road. If you love food, either city justifies a trip. Try one Lahore morning and one Karachi night if you can do both.
Weather
Karachi's winters are mild: January averages roughly 19 °C, with daytime highs around 26 °C. Summer is humid, with coastal breezes that soften but do not remove the heat. Lahore is much hotter in May to July, and cooler in winter, with poor air quality from about November to January.

Getting around
Lahore is easier for visitors on foot in the old city and has the Metro Bus and ride-hailing for the rest. Karachi is a sprawling city where distances are long and traffic is heavy, so plan on ride-hailing or a hired car with a driver, and cluster your sights by area. In both cities, use apps rather than negotiating with street drivers if you are unsure of fares.
Is Karachi or Lahore safer for visitors?
Neither is in the areas that the UK government advises against, and both receive Pakistani and overseas visitors. Karachi has a reputation for petty crime and has had security incidents in the past, so keep valuables out of sight, avoid walking at night in unfamiliar areas and take advice from your hotel.
