The best beaches in Karachi depend on what you want from the day. Sea View at Clifton is the easy evening out, right in the city. Sandspit and Hawksbay, about 45 minutes west, have cleaner sand and huts to rent. French Beach and Mubarak Village, further out, have the clearest water and the fewest people. For swimming, none of them is truly safe in summer, and from roughly mid-May to August the sea is at its most dangerous.

Drive times assume a weekday outside rush hour. On Sundays, public holidays and Eid, the roads to all of them fill up and the times can double.
Sea View (Clifton Beach): the easy evening out
Sea View is Karachi's city beach, running along the edge of Clifton and DHA. It is free, open at all hours, and the only beach you can reach in a quick evening drive from most of the city. The Clifton Cantonment Board landscaped the seafront between 2020 and 2023, with palm trees, walkways, seating and new toilets.
People come here for the walk, the sunset, camel and horse rides, and the snack stalls, not for the sea. The water is polluted by the city's sewage and storm drains, and the beach has a long history of drownings when crowds go in during rough weather. Go for the air and the atmosphere, and keep children on the sand.

Sandspit: the nearest of the western beaches
Sandspit is a long spit of sand west of the harbour, with the open sea on one side and mangrove backwaters on the other. It runs on towards Manora and is reached by the road across the backwaters from Mauripur. The sand is cleaner than at Clifton and the sea clearer, and there are camel and horse rides on the public stretches.
Much of the frontage is lined with huts, and the beach is one of the main green turtle nesting sites on this coast. The catch is the sea. Hawksbay and Turtle Beach: huts and open sea
Hawksbay lies about 20 km southwest of the city, just beyond Sandspit, and is where most of Karachi's rental huts are. The stretch often called Turtle Beach is part of the same coast. It is the classic hut day: a group of family or friends, a hut with a kitchen and a roof terrace, and a long afternoon on the sand.
Hawksbay faces the open sea and is known for strong rip currents; a Dawn report on beach rescues named it the most dangerous of the city's beaches. French Beach: clearer water, but not open to all
French Beach is a small fishing village between Hawksbay and Paradise Point, behind a boundary wall. It has a rocky shore, rock pools at low tide and some of the clearest water within easy reach of the city, which makes it the favourite for winter snorkelling.
It is not a public beach in the usual sense. The gate generally lets in people who own or have rented a hut there, and turning up without a booking is no guarantee of getting in. There is no restaurant, so everything comes with you. Read our French Beach guide before you plan a day there.
Mubarak Village and Churna Island: the far west
Mubarak Village is a fishing village at the western edge of Karachi, close to the Balochistan border and about two hours' drive from the centre. The water here is the clearest on the city's mainland, and it is the usual starting point for boats to Churna Island, about 7 km offshore, which has coral, snorkelling and cliff jumping.

Two places not to plan around
Paradise Point, once famous for its rock arch, has been closed to tourists since 2017 because it adjoins the Karachi Nuclear Power Complex. The arch itself has long since collapsed. You will still find old guides recommending it.
Manora is not a separate beach so much as the far end of Sandspit, reached by the road along the spit or by boat from Keamari. It has a lighthouse and a long beach, but it is a naval cantonment, so expect checkpoints and follow any instructions about where you can go.
Is it safe to swim at Karachi's beaches?
Mostly, no, and in summer, not at all. The Arabian Sea off Karachi is at its roughest from about mid-May to mid-August, when the southwest monsoon brings big swells and strong rip currents. Many of the city's drownings happen in exactly these months, very often young men who have come out for a picnic with friends and gone into the waves.
Every summer the Karachi commissioner issues Section 144 orders banning swimming, and sometimes any activity at the shoreline, at some or all of the city's beaches. In 2026 the order for the Keamari coast, which takes in Sandspit, Hawksbay, French Beach and Mubarak Village, ran from 23 May to 22 June. Dates change every year, so check local news before you go.
If you do go in, in the calm months only: stay within your depth, go where others are and lifeguards can see you, keep out near rocks and points, and never swim after dark. If a current pulls you out, swim parallel to the shore until it releases you, then come back in.
Which beach suits you?
- A quick evening with the family: Sea View. Walk, ride, eat, go home.
- A full day with a group: a hut at Hawksbay or Sandspit. Book well ahead for weekends and holidays, bring all your food and drinking water, and agree the arrival and departure times before you pay anything.
- Clear water and snorkelling in winter: French Beach, if you can get a hut, or a boat to Churna from Mubarak Village.
- Turtles: Hawksbay or Sandspit between September and February, quietly, at night, and without torches on the nests.
- Young children who want to paddle: the calm winter months at Sandspit or Hawksbay, with an adult in the water beside them.
