Clifton Beach and Sea View Karachi: Visitor Guide

Sea View is what Karachi calls Clifton Beach: the long public seafront along Clifton and DHA, free and open at all hours. Sea View Karachi is at its best for an evening walk, a camel ride, the sunset and something to eat. It is not a place to swim. The water is polluted by the city's drains, and the sea here has taken many lives, especially in the summer monsoon.

This guide covers what there is to do, how the rides and stalls work, where to park, when to go to avoid the worst of the crowds, and the honest picture on the water.

Where Sea View is, and what it looks like now

The beach runs along the southern edge of Clifton and on into DHA, with Sea View Road behind it. At the city end are the shrine of Abdullah Shah Ghazi, Bagh Ibne Qasim and Dolmen Mall Clifton. Further along, on the DHA side, the road leads towards Do Darya and its seafront restaurants.

The Clifton Cantonment Board landscaped the seafront between 2020 and 2023. It planted hundreds of coconut palms and other trees, laid paths and seating areas, and built new toilets. The result is a cleaner, better-lit promenade than Sea View had a decade ago, though the sand itself still collects litter after busy days.

What is there to do at Sea View?

Most visits follow the same easy pattern: park, walk along the sand or the promenade, watch the sun go down over the water, let the children ride something, eat, and go home. That is the whole appeal, and it works well for families with an hour or two free.

• Walking. The promenade is flat and paved, good for grandparents and pushchairs. The sand is firm near the water.
• Sunset. In the winter months the sun goes down over the open sea, and the light on the wet sand is the best of the day.
• Rides. Camels, horses and motorised beach buggies, run by independent operators along the sand.
• Food. Snack stalls on the beach and a line of restaurants along the road behind it.
• Nearby. Bagh Ibne Qasim, a large park across the road at the Clifton end, is a good place to let children run on grass after the beach.

Camel rides, horse rides and buggies

The camel and horse owners walk the beach looking for riders, and a short ride along the sand is the most traditional thing to do at Sea View. There is no fixed rate board. Agree the price and the length of the ride before anyone gets on, and agree whether it is per person or for the whole camel, since two children often share.

A few practical points:

• Hold small children. A camel standing up or kneeling down lurches hard. An adult should ride with any small child, or hold them from the ground.
• Beach buggies share the sand with walkers and small children, which is where the risk lies. If your teenager wants a go, pick a quiet weekday and ask the operator to keep well away from the crowd.
• Go early in the evening. Rides are easier to find, and less rushed, before the sunset crowd arrives.

Food stalls and restaurants

The beach stalls sell the usual Karachi seaside snacks: roasted corn, chaat, fries, tea and cold drinks. Some vendors were moved back from the prime spots during the redevelopment, so the stalls are more spread out than they were.

Along Sea View Road, and further on at Do Darya in DHA, there are sit-down restaurants, many with outdoor seating facing the sea. They fill up on weekend evenings. For a family meal on a Saturday or Sunday, arrive before sunset or book ahead.

If you are eating on the sand, take your rubbish back to a bin. The litter that blows along the tideline after a busy weekend is one reason the beach looks worse on Monday mornings.

Getting there and parking

Sea View is reached along Sea View Road from Clifton, or from the DHA side via Khayaban-e-Ittehad and the roads towards Do Darya. Parking is along the roads and service lanes behind the beach. On a weekday it is easy. On a Sunday evening, a public holiday or during Eid, the lanes fill up and the traffic slows to a crawl, so the last kilometre can take longer than the drive from home.

Ride-hailing is the easiest option on busy evenings, since you avoid the parking altogether and can be dropped close to the sand.

On special nights the police change the roads. For New Year's Eve at the end of 2025 they made Sea View Road one-way from McDonald's to the Clock Tower, with traffic sent back via Khayaban-e-Ittehad or Do Darya, and deployed more than 2,400 police across Clifton and Sea View. Similar plans are announced for other big occasions, so check the traffic police notice on the day.

When is Sea View crowded?

• Quietest: weekday mornings. The beach is almost empty apart from joggers and walkers.
• Pleasant and manageable: weekday evenings, especially in winter.
• Very busy: Saturday and Sunday evenings, from late afternoon until well after dark.
• Packed: Eid days, 14 August, New Year's Eve and other public holidays. Expect heavy traffic, long walks from the car and large crowds on the sand.

For a family with young children, a weekday evening between October and March is the sweet spot. The heat has gone, the sea breeze is cool, and you can still find parking.

How clean is the water?

Not clean. Untreated sewage and industrial waste from the city reach the sea through storm drains and nullahs, and Clifton is on the receiving end. A study published in 2025 found plastic made up nearly half the debris on the Clifton shoreline, and marine scientists have long advised visitors not to go into the water or let children play in the contaminated sand at the water's edge.

The redevelopment has made the promenade and the dry sand much tidier. It has not changed what comes down the drains. Treat the sea at Clifton as something to look at, and bring wipes or water so children can wash their hands before eating.

Can you swim at Sea View?

No, and in summer you may be breaking the law if you try. From about mid-May to mid-August the southwest monsoon brings big waves and strong currents to the Karachi coast. The commissioner issues Section 144 orders most summers banning swimming at the city's beaches, with dates that vary from year to year.

Sea View has seen some of Karachi's worst drowning tragedies. Over the Eid ul Fitr holidays in 2014, more than 20 people drowned at Sea View, Hawksbay and Sandspit while a swimming ban was in force. In July 2024 three friends were swept away near a restaurant at Sea View; two were rescued and one drowned.

Is Sea View worth it?

For what it is, yes. It is free, it is close, and on a cool winter evening there are few better ways to spend two hours in Karachi. Children love the camels, older relatives can walk on the promenade, and everyone eats well.

It is not worth it if you want a proper beach day. For clearer water, fewer people and space to spread out, drive west to Hawksbay or Sandspit, ideally with a hut booked for the day. And if you are visiting Karachi in June or July, go for the sea breeze in the evening but leave the water alone.
