The route from Karachi
The drive out of Karachi runs west on the N-25 through Hub, then turns onto the N-10, the Makran Coastal Highway, at Zero Point near Uthal. From there the road runs through Hingol National Park, past Kund Malir beach, the Princess of Hope rock formation and the switchbacks of Buzi Pass, before dropping back to the coast and running on to Ormara. It's a fully paved road, and the scenery through Hingol is a highlight of the drive in its own right rather than something to rush through.

Fuel on the way
Fuel stations thin out quickly once you're past Karachi's outskirts. Fill up before you leave the city, and treat the pump at Winder, not far along the N-25, as your last reliable stop for a proper branded fuel station before the long stretch through Hingol. Beyond that, don't assume you'll find fuel when you need it: carry a spare can if you're on a motorbike or a smaller car, and don't let the tank run low before Ormara.
Checkposts along the way
Expect several security checkposts between Karachi and Ormara, run by different forces along the N-25 and N-10. This is routine on this route, not a sign of anything unusual on a given day. Keep your CNIC (or passport and any required documentation, for foreign nationals) to hand, answer questions plainly about where you're going, and follow any instructions about current road conditions or timing. Since March 2025, Balochistan authorities have also restricted travel on this highway after dark, with public transport given set daylight departure windows; private vehicles should plan the same way, aiming to be off the road, or at your stop for the night, before dark.
Why Ormara works as an overnight base
Ormara's position, close to the midpoint of the Karachi–Gwadar run, is what makes it the obvious place to break the journey rather than a destination people set out for on its own. Splitting a roughly 650 km, nine-to-ten-hour total drive into two days at Ormara means neither day is pushed into the evening, which matters given the daylight-only advice for this road. One day or two?
Doing Karachi to Gwadar in a single day is possible for an experienced driver starting early, but it means eight to ten hours behind the wheel with only short stops, arriving late and probably driving the last stretch in fading light. Splitting the trip at Ormara removes that pressure, gives you a proper look at Hingol National Park along the way instead of driving past it, and fits far more comfortably with the general advice to keep this road to daylight hours.
