Karachi to Mohenjo-daro: Road, Rail and Air Options

Karachi to Mohenjo-daro is about 430 km by road, a drive of roughly 7 to 8 hours to Larkana, the nearest city, with the ruins another 28 km beyond it. There is no direct train or flight to the site itself: you travel by train or air to Larkana or Sukkur and cover the last stretch by road. Most visitors treat it as a two-day trip rather than a long day out from Karachi.

This guide sets out the three practical ways to get there: driving the whole way, taking the train to Larkana, and flying to Sukkur and driving on.

By road, the whole way

The most direct route from Karachi runs on the N-5 National Highway north to Sehwan Sharif, then onto the N-55 Indus Highway, which follows the west bank of the Indus through Mehar and on to Larkana. From Larkana, the N-155 continues 28 km to Mohenjo-daro itself. It is a flat, mostly two-lane road for the northern half, busy with truck traffic, so treat the distance as a full day's drive rather than a quick run.

Because it is a long day, most people either:

• Leave Karachi very early (by 5 or 6 am) to reach the ruins with enough daylight and energy left to see them properly, or
• Break the journey, staying a night in Larkana or Sukkur and visiting Mohenjo-daro fresh the next morning.

The second option works better for families and anyone visiting in the warmer months, since arriving exhausted in the midday heat is the worst way to see an unshaded archaeological site.

By train to Larkana

Pakistan Railways trains between Karachi and Lahore, or Karachi and Peshawar, stop at Larkana, the closest railhead to the ruins. Journey time from Karachi is typically in the region of 8 to 10 hours depending on the service, similar to or a little longer than the drive, and several trains leave Karachi in the evening for an early-morning arrival. From Larkana station, the ruins are a further 28 km by taxi or hired car.

The train suits travellers without their own vehicle who would rather not manage a full day's drive, and an overnight service means you lose less daylight than driving. Confirm the current timetable before booking, since schedules change.

By air to Sukkur

There is no airport at Mohenjo-daro itself with a regular passenger schedule, so flying means landing at Sukkur, about 110 km from the site, and covering the rest by road. PIA and South Air both fly Karachi–Sukkur, a flight of about an hour and ten minutes, after which the drive to Larkana and on to Mohenjo-daro takes roughly two hours in total. Flying and driving on is the fastest overall option if your schedule is tight, cutting a 7-to-8-hour road journey down to under half a day of travel.

Where to stay along the way

Larkana, about 28 km from the ruins, has the widest choice of hotels in the area and is where most visitors base themselves, whether they arrive by road, rail or air. There is also a small rest house at the Mohenjo-daro site itself, useful if you want to be at the gate the moment it opens, though options there are limited and basic. Sukkur, further away but on the main road and rail line, works well if you are combining the ruins with a day seeing the city, and it has more hotel choice again.

A simple two-day plan

Given the distances involved, splitting the trip over two days makes for a far easier visit than a single long push from Karachi:

1. Day one: travel to Larkana or Sukkur, by road, rail or a flight to Sukkur followed by a short drive. Arrive in the afternoon or evening and rest.
2. Day two: leave early for Mohenjo-daro, arriving close to opening time. Allow two to three hours for the ruins and an hour for the museum, as covered in our Mohenjo-daro visitor guide, then either start the journey back or continue on to Sukkur if you haven't been there yet.

This spreads the driving or travel time across two shorter days rather than one exhausting one, and it means you see the ruins with some energy left rather than at the end of an 8-hour drive.

Which option suits your trip?

• Have your own car and enjoy driving: go by road, but plan an overnight stop in Larkana or Sukkur rather than a same-day return.
• No car, want to sleep through the journey: the overnight train to Larkana.
• Short on time or travelling with young children: fly to Sukkur and hire a car for the final leg.
• Combining Mohenjo-daro with Sukkur: flying or training to Sukkur first, then driving down to Larkana, lets you see both without doubling back.

Is it safe to travel this route?

Parts of the Larkana and Sukkur divisions, including the riverine katcha areas off the main highway, have a history of kidnapping-for-ransom gangs, and the UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to Sindh north of and including Nawabshah, which covers this entire route. Pakistani families and school groups still travel to Mohenjo-daro regularly. Keep to the main highway, travel by day, and check current local advice before you go, particularly if driving yourself.
