Karachi to Keenjhar Lake: Route and Distance

Keenjhar Lake is about 120 km from Karachi by road, roughly two to two and a half hours' drive along the N-5 National Highway through Thatta. That's the route almost everyone takes, and it's straightforward: a single highway, well signed, with fuel and food stops along the way. A second route via the M-9 motorway exists but adds distance for most starting points in Karachi and is worth knowing about mainly as a fallback.

The main route: N-5 via Thatta

The straightforward way to Keenjhar is to take the N-5 National Highway north-east out of Karachi, in the direction of Hyderabad. The road runs through Gharo and on to Thatta, about 100 km from Karachi, and Keenjhar Lake lies a further 20 to 30 km beyond Thatta on the same highway, roughly 36 km from Thatta town itself by the most direct road.

The N-5 is a sealed, well-maintained national highway for this whole stretch, and the drive doesn't require anything beyond an ordinary car in good condition. The main variable is traffic leaving Karachi, particularly on a Friday afternoon or the morning of a public holiday, when the road out of the city can be slow for the first half hour or so.

Fuel and food along the way

• Gharo, about 40 km from Karachi, has fuel stations and roadside food, and is a natural point to top up if you didn't fill up in the city.
• Thatta, around 100 km in, has more choice of fuel and food, plus the town's own sites if you're stopping to see Makli or the Shah Jahan Mosque on the way.
• Along the final stretch to the lake, options thin out to simple highway dhabas until you reach the shore itself, where restaurants and stalls operate, mainly on weekends and holidays.

Fill up before you leave Karachi or at Gharo at the latest, and carry water, since stretches of the highway between towns have little to stop at.

The alternative: via the M-9 motorway

The M-9 motorway, which runs from Karachi to Hyderabad, has an interchange near Thana Bola Khan that connects towards the Keenjhar and Jimphir area by local road, offering a second way in from the motorway side rather than the older N-5.

For most journeys starting in central or eastern Karachi, the N-5 via Thatta is the more direct route, and it's the one with clearer, more established food and fuel stops. The M-9 route is worth considering mainly if you're already on the motorway heading towards Hyderabad for another reason, or starting from a part of Karachi closer to the M-9's southern end, since it avoids the N-5 through Gharo and Thatta.

Either way, confirm your route with a live map before you set out, since interchange access and local road conditions can change.

What the drive is like

The N-5 out of Karachi towards Thatta is flat, open highway for almost the entire distance, running through dry countryside with little shade. Traffic is a mix of intercity buses, trucks heading towards Hyderabad and beyond, and other day-trippers making the same trip to Thatta or Keenjhar, so it's busier than a quiet country road but nowhere near as demanding as driving through a city.

A few practical points for the drive itself:

• Overtaking trucks is the main hazard on this stretch, as on most of Pakistan's national highways; give yourself plenty of room and avoid overtaking on blind curves or brows.
• Heat can be intense from April through September, so carry more water than you think you need and keep an eye on tyre condition in the summer months.
• Signal is generally reliable along the N-5 itself, dropping out only in short stretches, unlike some of the mountain routes further north.
• Night driving on this route is manageable on a well-lit highway, but as with any long Pakistani highway, a tired driver is a bigger risk than the road itself, so swap drivers or take a break if you've had a long day.

Timing your drive

Plan on roughly two to two and a half hours each way under normal conditions. A few things affect this:

• Leaving Karachi early, before 8 am, avoids the worst of the city traffic on the way out.

Is it a straightforward drive?

Yes. This is one of the easier long day trips from Karachi: a single highway for almost the whole distance, well used by traffic between Karachi and Hyderabad, and no mountain roads, river crossings or unpaved stretches to worry about. A normal car and a driver comfortable with highway traffic is all it takes.
