Karachi to Hingol National Park: Road, Distance and Time

Karachi to Hingol National Park is roughly 240 km by road, and most sources put the drive at three and a half to four hours to Kund Malir at the eastern edge of the park. With stops, a fuel fill at Zero Point and a slow patch or two, plan on five to six hours each way and treat it as a long day trip at best. The route is Karachi, Hub, Uthal, then the Makran Coastal Highway (N-10) west from the Zero Point junction, on a smooth paved road.

What is the route from Karachi to Hingol?

1. Karachi to Hub. Leave the city on the road towards Hub, where you cross into Balochistan at the Hub checkpoint.
2. Hub to Uthal. Continue on the N-25 through Gadani to Uthal in Lasbela, about 120 km from Karachi.
3. Uthal to Zero Point. Zero Point is where the Makran Coastal Highway (N-10) leaves the N-25.
4. Zero Point to Kund Malir. The remaining stretch runs for around 150 km along the coast, past Aghor and across the Buzi Pass, to Kund Malir beach. The Princess of Hope rock formation stands roughly 40 minutes further on.

The Makran Coastal Highway itself was completed in December 2004 by the Frontier Works Organisation for the National Highway Authority, and runs 653 km from Karachi to Gwadar.

How far is it really?

Published distances range from around 175 to 250 km. The variation comes from different starting points in Karachi and different endpoints inside a park that covers about 6,100 square kilometres. Kund Malir is generally given as about 237 to 250 km from Karachi. If your target is the Princess of Hope or the Hingol river, add roughly 40 minutes of driving.

The highway is straight and the tarmac is smooth, so the time depends more on Karachi traffic, trucks on the N-25 and your stops than on the road surface.

How long does the drive take?

Most guides say three and a half to four hours from Karachi to Kund Malir with no stops. Realistically:

• Leave at dawn. This beats the Karachi traffic, lets you cross the Buzi Pass in good light and gets you to the beach before the heat.
• Add stops for fuel at Zero Point, tea, prayers and photographs. Five to six hours is a sensible allowance.
• Return before dark. The highway has few lights and services, and one guide reports patchy or no mobile coverage for long stretches.

A same-day return is possible but it is a long day, with roughly ten to twelve hours in the car. If you want to see the Princess of Hope and Sapat as well, an overnight stop in Ormara or Uthal makes it more relaxed, subject to the security advice below.

Road condition

The highway is described as smooth tarmac the whole way, and you do not need a 4x4 to reach Kund Malir or the Princess of Hope. Off-highway tracks to the mud volcanoes and some beaches are different, with sand and rough ground, so use a suitable vehicle and local knowledge for those. Drive carefully and watch for trucks.

Fuel, food and supplies

Fuel and food thin out quickly after the highway begins. Zero Point is described as the last reliable fuel and proper food. Beyond it, some roadside stalls sell petrol from barrels rather than proper stations, so start with a full tank and consider a spare can where it is safe to carry one. Carry water and snacks. Basic restaurants near the beach serve fish, dal and paratha, and paid toilets cost around PKR 30 according to a 2026 guide.

What to carry and one practical tip

• Your CNIC: there are checkpoints on the highway and registration is routine.
• Cash, since services along the route are basic.
• Water, sun protection and a hat.
• A power bank and an offline map.

Is the route safe?

Hingol is in Balochistan, and the UK government advises against all travel to the province, which it says can affect travel insurance. Overseas visitors should read that advice before planning anything.

Pakistani travellers from Karachi do make this trip, and it is a well-known weekend drive. But the Makran Coastal Highway has seen serious incidents. In 2019, 14 passengers were pulled from buses near Ormara and shot dead, and in 2021 security personnel were killed in an attack on a convoy near Ormara, both reported by Dawn. Those events happened further west than Kund Malir, but they are part of the picture.

Is Hingol worth the long drive?

For most people from Karachi, yes, as a once-a-year trip: the road to the coast is easy, and the Princess of Hope, Kund Malir and the stretch of desert coastline are unlike anything nearer the city. It suits confident drivers with a reliable car. It does not suit anyone expecting hotels, shade, mobile signal or quick help on the way. In summer the heat is severe, so October to March is the sensible window.
