Karachi to Fairy Meadows: Fastest Route, Time and Cost

The fastest way from Karachi to Fairy Meadows is to fly to Islamabad, take PIA's short flight on to Gilgit, and drive about an hour and a half to two hours down the Karakoram Highway to Raikot Bridge. From there a local jeep takes you to Tato and you walk the last 5 km. With a night in Islamabad on the way, that puts you on the meadow on the second day. The more dependable option is to fly to Islamabad and drive, which takes two days more.

There is no direct way: Fairy Meadows has no road, and there is no flight from Karachi to Gilgit. This guide compares the routes on time, cost and risk.

Option 1: fly via Islamabad to Gilgit (fastest)

This is the quickest way when the weather cooperates.

1. Karachi to Islamabad. About two hours, with Airblue, AirSial, Fly Jinnah and PIA among the airlines on the route, and flights from early morning to late evening. Fly up the afternoon or evening before, and sleep in Islamabad.
2. Islamabad to Gilgit. About an hour and a quarter on PIA's small ATR turboprops, usually in the morning. PIA is the only airline to Gilgit, and it also sells Karachi to Gilgit tickets with the Islamabad connection built in.
3. Gilgit to Raikot Bridge. Roughly 76 to 80 km south down the KKH, an hour and a half to two hours by car. Arrange a car and driver through your Gilgit hotel or a local firm, and ask the driver to collect you again on your return day.
4. Raikot Bridge to Tato by jeep, 15 km on an unpaved track, then the walk to the meadow, about 5 km and two to four hours.

If the Gilgit flight leaves on time, you can be at Raikot Bridge before midday and on the meadow by late afternoon. On the way up, sit on the right-hand side of the plane: on a clear day the flight passes Nanga Parbat, the mountain you are going to see.

The catch: the Gilgit flight

Gilgit's airport lies in a narrow valley, and the flight only operates in good visibility. Cancellations happen in every season, most often from December to April, and seats sell out early in summer and around Eid. Two things protect you:

• Never connect on the same day on the way home. Fly Gilgit to Islamabad, then Karachi the next day, or at least with many hours between.
• Keep a spare day at the end. If the flight from Gilgit is cancelled, the road back to Islamabad takes most of two days.

Option 2: fly to Islamabad and drive (most dependable)

Karachi to Islamabad is one of the busiest routes in the country, so this plan does not depend on a small aircraft and a clear sky. From Islamabad you drive to Raikot Bridge over two days:

• In summer, over the Babusar Pass: Islamabad to Naran on the first day, then Naran over Babusar Top to Chilas and Raikot Bridge on the second.
• When Babusar is closed, roughly November to May, up the Karakoram Highway through Besham and Chilas.

Door to meadow, that is about three days from Karachi, and the same back. It suits families with fixed dates, groups who want a car and driver for the whole trip, and anyone travelling in winter or spring, when Gilgit flights are least reliable. Option 3: fly direct to Skardu

PIA and Airblue fly Karachi to Skardu non-stop on a few days a week, landing in the morning after about two and a quarter hours. From Skardu the road runs about 167 km down the Indus to Jaglot on the KKH, around four hours, and Raikot Bridge is a short drive south of there.

That is a long day before the jeep, so you would normally sleep near Raikot Bridge or in Chilas and go up the next morning. It makes most sense when you are combining Fairy Meadows with Skardu, or when the Gilgit flights are full. Floods cut the Skardu road in July 2026, so check that it is open before you choose this route.

The train or the car from Karachi

You can also go all the way by land. The Green Line train runs from Karachi to Islamabad in roughly 23 to 24 hours, and driving is about 1,400 km and two full days to Islamabad. Either adds two to four days to the round trip before you reach the mountains. They only make sense on a trip of two weeks or more, or for a large group sharing one car. How long does it take from Karachi?

With two nights on the meadow and a spare day at the end, the shortest sensible trip from Karachi is about six days via Gilgit and eight days via Islamabad by road.

What does it cost?

Fares change daily and with the season, so these are rough 2026 figures, not quotes:

• Karachi to Islamabad: roughly PKR 15,000 to 25,000 one way, more for last-minute seats in peak weeks.
• Islamabad to Gilgit: roughly PKR 18,000 to 32,000 one way in 2026 listings.
• A car and driver from Islamabad: about PKR 7,000 to 10,000 a day for a sedan in 2026, before fuel, tolls and the driver's allowance. Our guide to hiring a car with driver explains the full cost.

Our rough sums, per person, for flights alone: flying via Gilgit comes to about PKR 66,000 to 114,000 return, against PKR 30,000 to 50,000 return to Islamabad. The Gilgit route saves two days each way, but for a family of four the flights can cost more than everything else on the trip. For four or more sharing a car, flying to Islamabad and driving is usually cheaper.

Which route should you choose?

• Short on time, flexible about dates: fly via Gilgit, with a night in Islamabad on the way up and a spare day at the end.
• Fixed dates, or a family with children or older parents: fly to Islamabad and drive. It is slower but far less likely to strand you.
• Travelling from October to May: plan on the road from Islamabad, and treat any Gilgit flight as a bonus.
• Combining with Skardu: fly into Skardu and out of Islamabad or Gilgit.
