The Karachi Green Line BRT is a bus rapid transit line running on its own dedicated lane from Abdullah Chowk in Surjani Town, in the north of the city, to Numaish in central Karachi, next to Mazar-e-Quaid. It has 22 stations, buses every few minutes at busy times, and distance-based fares paid by card or ticket. For visitors it is useful mainly for reaching Mazar-e-Quaid and the north of the city, not for Clifton, Saddar or the airport.
It has been running since January 2022 and an extension towards Saddar is being built. This guide covers the route, the stations, how fares and the card work, what the hours are, and when it is worth using.

Where does the Green Line run?
The line runs north to south along one of Karachi's main corridors, through North Karachi, Nagan Chowrangi, North Nazimabad and Nazimabad, before coming down to Numaish on M.A. Jinnah Road. Long stretches are elevated, including the section from Gurumandir through Nazimabad and North Karachi up to Nagan Chowrangi, with ground-level stations elsewhere.
Because the buses have their own lane, journeys along the corridor are far more predictable than in ordinary traffic. The trade-off is that the line serves one corridor only. It does not go to Clifton, Defence, Sea View, Saddar's main sights or the airport.

How much is the Green Line fare?
Fares are distance-based. At launch in January 2022, The News reported a minimum fare of PKR 15 by card, rising by PKR 2 for every 2 km, with PKR 55 for the full route. A rechargeable Green Line card cost PKR 100, and single paper tickets were also sold.
Fares have been revised since then, and we could not confirm the current fare table from a 2026 source. They remain low by Karachi standards, but check the fare board at the station before you travel, and buy a card if you will use the line more than once or twice.
What time does the Green Line run?
Buses start at 7 am from both terminals. We could not confirm the normal closing time from a current source, so ask at the station if you plan to travel late.
During the last days of Ramadan in 2023, the service was extended for Eid shoppers until 11:30 pm from Abdullah Chowk and 12:30 am from Numaish. Treat that as a special arrangement rather than the normal timetable.
Buses run frequently, every few minutes at busy times, so you rarely need a timetable during the day.
Is the Green Line useful for tourists?
Only for a few journeys. The stops that matter most to a visitor are:
- Numaish, the southern terminus, a short walk from Mazar-e-Quaid, Jinnah's mausoleum. See our guide to Mazar-e-Quaid timings.
- Board Office, for the Orange Line interchange.
- Hyderi, for the busy markets of North Nazimabad.
For Clifton, Sea View, Frere Hall, Empress Market or the airport, ride-hailing or a hired car is still the easier option. Our guide to getting around Karachi compares the Green Line with Peoples Bus Service, rickshaws and ride-hailing, and our guide to getting from Karachi airport to the city covers arrivals.
The extension to Saddar
The second phase of the Green Line runs on from Numaish along M.A. Jinnah Road towards Municipal Park and Jama Cloth Market, which would bring the line close to the old commercial centre around Saddar. Business Recorder reported construction of the 1.9 km extended track starting in late 2025, with a target completion date of 30 October 2026. In September 2026 local press still described it as under construction.
Until it opens, Numaish is the end of the line. Check local news for an opening date before you plan a journey around it.
Using the Green Line: practical tips
- Get your card or ticket at the station counter, and follow the instructions at the gates.
- Use the women and family section where the bus doors and seating are marked for it.
- Allow for broken escalators and lifts. In September 2026 Minute Mirror reported that several escalators and lifts at elevated stations were out of order. Older passengers, families with prams and anyone with heavy luggage should be ready for stairs.
- Avoid rush hour if you can, when buses are packed with commuters.
- Keep your phone and wallet close in crowded buses, as on any busy transport. Our guide on whether Karachi is safe for tourists covers general precautions.
Who should use the Green Line?
It suits visitors staying with family or in hotels in North Nazimabad, Nazimabad or North Karachi who want a cheap, air-conditioned and predictable ride into the centre. It also suits anyone who wants to see Mazar-e-Quaid without sitting in traffic on the way back north.
It does not suit a first-time visitor based in Clifton or Saddar who wants to tick off the main sights, because none of them are on the line yet. For planning the rest of your trip, our travel guide and our list of places to visit in Karachi are the places to start.
