Karachi Fish Harbour is the city's working fishing port at West Wharf, in the Keamari area, and the place where most of Pakistan's fish catch comes ashore. It is not a tourist site: it is a busy commercial harbour with auction halls, boats, ice, processing plants and a great deal of noise and smell. A short history
The harbour was built by the federal government in 1959. After the 1973 Constitution made fisheries a provincial subject, it passed to the Sindh government in 1974, and the Karachi Fisheries Harbour Authority was created by ordinance in 1984 to run it. The European Union funded a major upgrade in 1992.
According to the Sindh Livestock and Fisheries Department, the harbour has three auction halls, a landing pier with floating pontoons, boat-building yards and dozens of processing plants. Wikipedia, drawing on the same authority, says over 90 per cent of Pakistan's fish and seafood catch and exports pass through it; the department's own page puts the figure for exports at roughly 80 per cent. Sources differ, but the message is the same: this is the country's main fish port. A rehabilitation project is listed with a target completion of June 2027.

It is a working place, and photographs of people are best taken only after asking. Reviewers describe strong smells, wet floors and crowds, and note that stalls outside the main building can be less fresh than the harbour's own market.
When to go
Go early in the morning. The wholesale trade and auction are concentrated in the early hours, and by midday the activity has slowed. We could not find a published auction timetable, so treat the best window as early morning and expect it to vary with the boats and the tide.

How to get there and what the rules are
The harbour is at West Wharf in the Keamari district, on the port side of the city. A taxi or ride-hailing app to "Karachi Fish Harbour" or "West Wharf" is the simplest way; see our guide to Karachi public transport for the options.

Organised group visits and fishing activities are reported to need permission, sometimes with several days' notice, so contact the KFHA before bringing a group. This is a port area, so carry your CNIC and follow any instruction from harbour staff or security.

- Wear closed shoes you can wash, and clothes you don't mind smelling of fish.
- Bring small cash notes if you plan to buy.
- Go with someone else and keep phones and bags close in the crowd.
- Do not climb onto boats or pontoons without the owner's permission.
