Karachi's best seafood runs from a whole fried fish eaten off a paper plate near the fishing harbour to a table on a platform over the sea in Clifton, and the difference in price is large. This guide sorts Karachi's seafood by budget rather than by neighbourhood: what to expect, roughly what it costs, and which months bring the best catch.

Budget: fried fish near the source

The cheapest and often freshest seafood in Karachi is sold close to where the boats come in, around the Karachi Fish Harbour in Kemari and the fishing village of Ibrahim Hyderi, where stalls fry whole fish to order straight from the day's catch. A whole fried fish here typically costs somewhere in the range of a few hundred to just over a thousand rupees, depending on the type and size, which is markedly less than the same fish plated at a restaurant.

This is not a polished dining experience. Expect simple plastic seating or none at all, a strong smell of the working harbour, and a menu that depends on what came in that morning rather than a fixed list. It suits visitors who want the most authentic version of Karachi's seafood culture and don't mind a rougher setting to get it.

Budget to mid-range: neighbourhood and old-city stalls

Fried fish, usually pomfret or a smaller white fish in a spiced batter, is also sold from stalls scattered across the city, including around the seafront and in Boat Basin, at prices closer to a few hundred rupees a portion. Burns Road and the old city have their own seafood-adjacent traditions, from fish pakoras to the occasional dedicated fried-fish counter among the kabab and nihari shops. Our Burns Road food street guide covers the old city's wider food scene in more detail.

At this level, look for a stall with a visible queue and fish being fried in front of you rather than sitting under a heat lamp, the same rule that applies to any street food in the city.

Mid-range: sit-down restaurants

A step up from the stalls, Karachi has a wide spread of mid-range restaurants specialising in seafood, typically charging in the range of roughly PKR 1,500 to 3,500 per person for a full meal of fried or grilled fish, prawn karahi and rice or naan. These restaurants are found across Clifton, DHA and the old city, and many double as general Pakistani restaurants with a strong seafood section on the menu rather than seafood-only kitchens.

Prawn karahi, prawns cooked in a spiced tomato-based gravy in the same style as a chicken or mutton karahi, is one of the most widely ordered dishes at this level, along with grilled or fried whole fish and fish tikka.

Higher-end: the seafront restaurants

Karachi's more expensive seafood dining sits along the coast in Clifton and DHA, including the restaurants at Do Darya, where a meal for one can run from roughly PKR 5,000 upwards for premium items such as crab and larger prawns, served with sea views and a more formal setting than anywhere else on this list. Our Do Darya guide covers which restaurants are currently open there and what they charge.

At this level the seafood itself is often the same fish available more cheaply elsewhere in the city; the extra cost buys the setting, the service and, at the best-known names, a longer-established reputation.

Which months bring the best seafood

Karachi's seafood season follows the Arabian Sea's water temperature. November to February, the cooler months, bring the best pomfret, prawns and crab close to shore, and the catch during this period is generally regarded as the freshest and fattest of the year. Prawns and smaller shrimp are more associated with the warmer months, while pomfret, kingfish and other larger fish are at their best in winter.

This lines up with the most comfortable months to be outdoors in Karachi generally, so a winter visit suits both the seafood and the sightseeing.

What to order, and what to skip

  • Pomfret, fried or grilled whole, is Karachi's most popular fish and the safest order for a first-time visitor.
  • Prawns, either in a karahi or grilled, are widely available and at their best in the warmer months.
  • Crab is a higher-end order, usually priced by weight, and best at the sit-down and seafront restaurants rather than street stalls.
  • Kingfish and sole are common in winter and work well grilled with simple spices.
  • Be cautious with raw or lightly cooked seafood anywhere in the city; Karachi's seafood culture is built around fried and grilled dishes rather than raw preparations, and that is the safer choice for visitors.

Which level suits you

For a genuine taste of how the city eats seafood day to day, and the lowest price, go to the fish harbour or a neighbourhood stall and accept a basic setting. For an easy, comfortable meal with a full menu and air conditioning, a mid-range restaurant in Clifton or the old city is the more practical choice for most visitors, especially families. Save the seafront restaurants at Do Darya for an evening built around the setting as much as the food.
