Jilani Park (Race Course Park) Lahore: Timings and Entry

Jilani Park, still widely called Race Course Park, is an 88-acre public park on Jail Road in Lahore, opposite Services Hospital. Visitor listings show it open from about 6 am to 10 pm every day, and ordinary entry to the grounds is listed as free. It is best known for its lake and artificial waterfall, a long jogging track, and the flower shows that fill it in late winter and spring.

This guide covers the practical side: hours, what is free and what costs extra, how to spend a visit, when the flowers are out, and who will enjoy it. It is a park for a slow half-day, not a sight to tick off in twenty minutes.

What is Jilani Park?

The park was laid out on the old Lahore racecourse grounds and opened in 1985. It was named after the then governor of Punjab, Ghulam Jilani Khan, but almost nobody in Lahore uses the official name, so ask a rickshaw driver for "Race Course" and you will be understood at once.

It is a managed city park, run by the PHA, rather than a heritage site. There are wide lawns, a lake, a hill and waterfall feature, a polo ground and riding area on the grounds, and a couple of eating places, including the Polo Lounge restaurant. Fast-food outlets sit just outside the boundary.

Timings and entry fee

Listing sites give the opening hours as 6 am to 10 pm, seven days a week. Hours can shift for special events, for weather, or during a festival, and we could not find a current PHA notice confirming them, so treat them as a guide.

Ordinary entry to the park is listed as free. Boat rentals on the lake, food, and some events inside the park do charge, and the PHA has ticketed some of its larger shows in the past. Carry small notes in cash, and if there is a gate ticket on the day, pay the price posted at the counter rather than whatever a person outside quotes.

What to do at Jilani Park

• Walk or jog the track. The tree-lined track around the park is the main reason locals come, especially at dawn and after sunset. Sources put its length at about 2.7 km to 1.8 miles (roughly 2.9 km), so expect a little under three kilometres for a full loop.
• Sit by the lake. There is an artificial lake with boat hire, and the waterfall is switched on through the day. The area around the water is the busiest part of the park on evenings and weekends.
• Let children run. There is a play area with swings and slides, and open lawns big enough for a cricket game or a picnic.
• Watch for events. The park hosts flower exhibitions, chrysanthemum shows in winter, food festivals and family events through the year. Dates change, so check the PHA's announcements or local news before you plan around one.

Flower shows and the spring festival

Chrysanthemum displays come earlier, in the cooler months, and the park also has smaller seasonal shows. The displays are usually free to walk through or carry a modest ticket, and the crowds peak on weekends. Go on a weekday morning if you want to photograph flowers without people in the frame.

Best time to visit

April to September is hot, and by midday the park is nearly empty. If you go in summer, go within an hour of opening or after sunset, when the evening walkers arrive.

How to get there

The park is on Jail Road, roughly a five to ten minute drive from Gulberg and Lahore Cantonment, and about ten minutes from Mall Road by car in light traffic. Ride-hailing apps and rickshaws will take you to the main gate, and public transport does not stop at the door, so a taxi or app ride is the easy way. Parking near the gates fills up on weekends and during flower shows, so expect a walk from the car or arrive early.

Practical tips

• Go on a weekday if you can. Weekends and public holidays are crowded, particularly around the lake and during flower shows.
• Wear proper shoes if you plan to do the full track, and carry water in summer.
• Keep valuables close in busy periods, as in any large city park.
• Eat before you come if you are particular. The park has a few canteens and a restaurant, and there is a cluster of fast-food outlets just outside.
• Families with prams will manage the paved paths, but the grounds are large, so plan rest stops.

Is it worth visiting?

For Lahore residents it is a daily habit. For a visitor with limited time, it is a pleasant break rather than a headline sight. It suits families with small children, joggers and walkers, photographers in the flower season, and anyone who needs green space after a day in the Walled City.
