Compare the islands near Karachi by access, cost and what you can do there: Manora, Churna, Bundal, Buddo and Shamspir, and which one suits your day.

The islands near Karachi are not interchangeable. Manora is the easy one, reached by a short ferry from Keamari. Churna is the one for snorkelling, an hour by boat from Mubarak Village. Bundal and Buddo are uninhabited delta islands with no regular service, and Shamspir is a working fishing village rather than a place built for visitors. Pick by what you want from the day, and by how much organising you are willing to do.

This guide compares the five on access, cost and things to do, using what we could verify. Where a price or a rule is not confirmed, we say so rather than guess.

Manora: the easiest island

Manora lies at the mouth of Karachi harbour and has a British-era lighthouse and a 19th-century Hindu temple, along with a beach that is busy at weekends. Public boats leave from the Keamari jetty, and a recent visitor account puts the fare at about PKR 100 per person, with the option of hiring a whole boat. That is one account, not a price list, so ask on the jetty.

There is also a road route now, via a newly built link, according to current travel guides. Photography is restricted around the naval areas, so ask before pointing a camera at anything with a uniform near it. Our Manora Island guide covers the ferry, the lighthouse and the cantonment rules in detail.

Churna: the one for snorkelling

Churna is the established day trip for clear water. The route is by road to Mubarak Village, about an hour from the city, then a boat of about an hour out to the island. Zameen.com notes that it is managed with the involvement of the Pakistan Navy and the Pakistan Game Fishing Association.

Prices come mostly from tour operators and vary: 2026 listings we saw ranged from about PKR 5,000 to 7,000 per person for a snorkelling package and PKR 9,500 to 12,000 for scuba diving, typically with transport, boat, equipment and meals. These are operator advertisements, so compare what each includes. Sources differ on the best months, with November to February the most often quoted. See our Churna Island guide and the Mubarak Village guide.

Bundal: the quiet delta island

Bundal sits south-east of Defence and is uninhabited, with mangroves, mudflats and the shrine of Yousuf Shah, whose urs draws thousands of coastal people each year. There is no scheduled boat, sources disagree on the departure point and the crossing time, and we could not confirm whether visitors need permission. It suits people who enjoy empty coast and are happy to arrange a private boat. Our Bundal Island guide sets out the detail and the uncertainties.

Buddo (Dingi): Bundal's neighbour

Buddo lies east of Bundal at the western edge of the Indus delta and is also known as Dingi and Muchaq. Wikipedia describes it as a flat island about 2 metres above sea level. Its main historical interest is Ratto Kot, the ruins of a fortress said to be Sasanian in style, largely buried under mud.

We found no regular visitor service, fares or facilities for Buddo, and the Sindh government notified the island as protected forest in 2022. For most travellers it is something you see on a map rather than a place to plan a day around. Treat anyone who sells a "Buddo Island tour" with the same caution as for Bundal and ask for specifics.

Shamspir: a fishing village, not an attraction

Shamspir lies in the harbour backwaters near Sandspit, west of Kakapir. Wikipedia lists about 5,000 residents in 2008, and says the island was ringed by dense mangroves until 2006. It takes its name from the shrine of Hazrat Sham Pir, and travel guides say you can reach it by boat from Keamari in about 30 minutes.

An older account describes an island with no roads, no mains water or electricity and a pier at the front. That is a community living there, not a resort. If you go, go with someone who knows the village, keep photography respectful and do not treat people's homes as scenery.

How do the islands compare?

  • Easiest day out: Manora, with a ferry and a beach.
  • Best for swimming and snorkelling: Churna, with the caveats about sea conditions and operators in its own guide.
  • Quietest: Bundal, if you can arrange a boat and accept the uncertainty.
  • Most cultural: Shamspir for the community and shrine, Bundal for its urs.
  • Least practical: Buddo, which has no visitor infrastructure we could find.

There are two farther islands. Astola is a long offshore trip covered in our Astola Island guide, and Kaio is covered in our Kaio Island guide.

Which season and what to know before going

Winter is the most comfortable season for any boat trip from Karachi: calmer water, cooler air and, for the delta islands, migratory birds. The monsoon months are the worst, because swell makes small boats unsafe and the city often restricts access to the sea; our beach ban guide explains the rules. For boats, insist on life jackets, check the capacity and agree the fare first, as set out in our boat hire guide.

Pollution is a real issue near the city, so we would not plan on swimming close to the harbour or the delta islands. More outings are on our destinations page.

Which island should you choose?

For a first visit with family, choose Manora. If snorkelling is the goal, choose Churna and book through an operator that can show its safety gear. If you want quiet and do not mind improvising, ask about Bundal. Skip Buddo unless you have a specific reason, and visit Shamspir only with a local contact.
