Both routes are straightforward, and once you're there, the museum and the scattered archaeological sites are close enough together to see in a single loop by car or rickshaw.

From Islamabad and Rawalpindi
Taxila sits just off the GT Road (N-5), the historic route running northwest out of Rawalpindi toward Peshawar. By car, it is a simple, well-signed drive of about 35 km from Islamabad, usually under an hour outside rush hour. There is no motorway shortcut needed for this stretch; the GT Road itself is a good, mostly dual carriageway road for this section.
If you don't have a car, wagons and vans running the GT Road route from Rawalpindi's terminals, including services that pass through Faizabad, head out toward Taxila and Wah Cantonment and can drop you close to the museum. It is a slower and less comfortable option than driving, but a genuinely cheap one, and it is how many local visitors make the trip. A taxi or ride-hailing car from Islamabad or Rawalpindi is the easier middle option if you'd rather not drive yourself but don't want to rely on public wagons.
From Lahore
Taxila is a longer trip from Lahore, roughly 380 km, and most people cover it by motorway: the M2 to Islamabad, then a short stretch of GT Road on to Taxila. Allow four to four and a half hours of driving, more with stops, which makes Taxila a full day trip from Lahore rather than a quick add-on, and a stopover in Islamabad the night before is worth considering if you also want time to see the ruins properly rather than rushing there and back in a single long day.
Coach services run from Lahore to Rawalpindi and Islamabad throughout the day; from either city you can continue to Taxila by taxi, wagon or a hired car for the day, as above.
By train
The Karachi–Peshawar railway line passes through the Taxila area, with services calling at Taxila and nearby Wah stations, but train timings are limited and less convenient than road transport for a day trip. Most visitors, Pakistani and foreign, reach Taxila by road.
Getting around once you're there
The Taxila valley's sites, the museum, Bhir Mound, Sirkap, Jaulian, Mohra Moradu and Dharmarajika, are spread over several kilometres, too far to walk between comfortably in the heat for most of the year. Once you've arrived, your options are:
- Your own car, the most flexible option if you're driving from Islamabad or Rawalpindi anyway.
- A hired rickshaw or taxi for the day, arranged in Taxila town or through your hotel, which can wait at each site while you look around.
- A driver as part of a longer Islamabad or Rawalpindi day, useful if Taxila is one stop among several, such as Hasan Abdal's Gurdwara Panja Sahib and Wah Gardens, both on the same GT Road corridor.
