Hotels in Sost: Where to Stay by Budget

Hotels in Sost are basic to mid-range motels and small hotels strung along the Karakoram Highway and up the slope near the dry port. Listing sites in 2025 and 2026 show rooms from about PKR 2,500 at the plainest end to roughly PKR 7,000 to 12,000 for the better hotels, with autumn averages well above winter ones. Sost is the last town before the Khunjerab Pass, so you stay here for an early start at the border, not for the town itself.

What kinds of stay are in Sost?

There are about two dozen properties listed, but they fall into three groups.

Basic motels and guesthouses. Older, simple rooms with attached bathrooms, often used by truckers, traders and travellers waiting for a border bus. They are clean enough but plain. One older travel-guide listing gives about PKR 2,500 for a double; expect it to be higher now.

Mid-range hotels. Larger rooms, hot water, a restaurant, sometimes Wi-Fi. Several sit uphill from the highway near the dry port, where the view is better and the road noise is less. Listing sites show roughly PKR 7,000 to 12,000 a night for these, more in autumn.

Hilltop and river-view hotels. A few properties sit among fields and orchards away from the highway and give the best views for the price. Ask exactly where the hotel is, since the road up can be steep.

What does it cost?

Roughly, and converting from dollar figures on booking sites at about PKR 280 to the dollar:

• Basic motels and guesthouses: from about PKR 2,500.
• Mid-range hotels: about PKR 7,000 to 12,000 a night.
• Peak season (September to November) averages on one major listing site are around three times the winter average.

Prices change with the season, the exchange rate and Eid. Treat these as a guide and ask the hotel for a current price in writing or on WhatsApp.

When it makes sense to stay in Sost

• You want the earliest start at Khunjerab. From Sost the top is much closer than from Karimabad, so you avoid a long pre-dawn drive.
• You are crossing to China by bus. The immigration office is here and gets busy in the morning. Arrive early, and check the current status of cross-border passenger services with the bus companies, as they change with season and policy.
• You are heading up the Chapursan valley. Sost is the natural base for that turn.

What to check before booking

• Heating and hot water. Nights are cold even in summer at this height. Ask about heaters between October and April.
• Altitude. If you have come up from Gilgit in one or two days, sleeping at 2,800 metres can bring headaches. See our note on altitude sickness in Gilgit-Baltistan.
• Payment and cash. Small places take cash. Withdraw before you drive up from Karimabad or Gilgit.
• Signal. SCOM works in town; other networks are patchy.
• Border-season crowds. When buses are running to Tashkurgan, or many trucks queue at the port, rooms fill early. Ring ahead.

Is Sost a good place to spend the night?

It is a working border town, not a resort. It suits people with a practical reason to be here: an early Khunjerab start, a border crossing, or a trek into Chapursan. It suits less anyone who wants an evening stroll, a good choice of restaurants or a view of Passu Cones. Most visitors are happier in Passu or Gulmit and drive up in the morning.
