Hotels in Khairpur are few. Tripadvisor lists only four properties in the city itself, all simple city hotels and guest houses, so most visitors who want more choice, a restaurant and air conditioning they can rely on stay in Sukkur, about 21 to 25 km away, and visit Khairpur as a day trip. If you only want to see Faiz Mahal and the old city, either base works.

This guide sets out what is listed in Khairpur, what Sukkur adds, and how to decide. It does not cover what to see; our guide to places to visit in Khairpur does that.

What is listed in Khairpur

The four city properties on Tripadvisor are Imperial Banquet and Hotel, Shahi Darbar Hotel, Red Palace Hotel Restaurant and Keenjhar Hotel Guest House. We have not seen inside any of them and we are not recommending one over another. They are listed because they appear on a major booking platform, and each has few reviews compared with hotels in bigger cities.

Tripadvisor puts the starting price for Khairpur at about US$28 a night, which is roughly PKR 8,000 at recent exchange rates, and notes that autumn is the cheapest season. Treat that as a floor for a basic room rather than a quote. Rates change, and a family room with working air conditioning will cost more.

One of them has "Banquet" in its name, so ask when you book whether events are on during your stay.

Why many visitors stay in Sukkur instead

Sukkur is the larger city on the Indus, and on Booking.com the best-reviewed places near Khairpur are in Sukkur rather than in Khairpur. RT Grace Royal Taj Hotel, for example, showed a 9.1 out of 10 rating from 126 reviews, from about £57 a night, and PC Inn Executive Class Hotel is listed as a three-star property. Cheaper guest houses start at around £11 to £17 a night, though the lowest-priced ones have ratings around 5.6 to 6 out of 10. Those figures were on the site in 2026 and move with the dates you search.

Sukkur also has the practical advantages of a bigger city: a railway station, an airport, restaurants and more taxi drivers. It is the natural base if your trip also takes in the Sukkur Barrage or Mohenjo-daro. Our Karachi to Sukkur guide covers getting there.

The drive between the two cities is about 21 to 25 km depending on where you start, so a day trip to Khairpur from a Sukkur hotel is easy.

Which base suits which trip

Stay in Khairpur if:

  • you want an early start at Faiz Mahal and the city's other sights;
  • you are interested in the local date trade (see Khairpur dates);
  • you are comfortable with a basic room and have a confirmed booking.

Stay in Sukkur if:

  • you are travelling with children or older parents and want a hotel with more reviews and a proper restaurant;
  • you need an airport or rail connection the same day;
  • you plan to combine Khairpur with Sukkur sights or an onward trip to Larkana.

Khairpur's Kot Diji Fort is roughly 21 to 25 km south of the city, so either base puts you within an hour of it.

What to check before you book

  • Confirm by phone or message. With so few listings, details such as air conditioning, a generator and parking matter. Ask about all three.
  • Ask about power cuts. Summer heat makes a generator more important than a good view.
  • Ask whether the price includes breakfast and whether there is a family room.
  • Keep cash. Smaller hotels may not take cards.
  • Arrive before dark if you can. Roads in upper Sindh are better driven in daylight.

When to visit

October to March is the sensible window. Khairpur is one of the hottest cities in Pakistan, and the worst of the summer heat can climb above 50°C, which makes sightseeing on foot unpleasant. If you must travel in summer, plan sights for early morning and spend the middle of the day indoors.

Is it safe to stay in Khairpur?

The UK government's travel advice for Pakistan currently advises against all but essential travel to Sindh north of Nawabshah, which includes Khairpur, Sukkur and Larkana. Pakistani visitors do travel here for family visits, shrines, dates and heritage, but check current local news and police advice before you set out, and avoid night driving on highways. If you hold a foreign passport, read your own government's advice first, because it can void travel insurance.

Is it worth staying in Khairpur at all?

For a first-time visitor, Sukkur is the easier, better-reviewed base, with Khairpur as a day trip. Staying in Khairpur makes sense when you want an unhurried morning at the palace or a quieter town, and you have checked the room. If you are looking at longer trips across Sindh, our travel guide has planning basics.
