The harvest runs through the hottest months of the year, July and August, when orchards along the Indus fill with pickers and wholesale markets in town fill with fresh fruit.

Dates ripen and are harvested through July and August, when Khairpur's already scorching summer heat is at its peak. This is also, unavoidably, one of the least comfortable times of year to travel in Sindh, with daytime temperatures regularly climbing well past 40°C, so a visit built around the harvest needs planning around the heat as much as around the fruit.
Outside these months, the palm groves are still worth a look for anyone travelling through, but the markets won't have the volume or freshness of harvest-time stock.
Aseel dates and other varieties
Khairpur's signature variety is Aseel, prized for its caramel-like sweetness, soft golden-amber flesh and long shelf life, and grown almost nowhere else in Pakistan in the same quality. The district grows well over a hundred other varieties alongside it, but Aseel is what most buyers, local and export, come for. The combination of the district's alluvial soil, hot dry summers and position along the Indus is generally credited with giving Khairpur's dates their particular flavour.
Where to buy them
Khairpur town has wholesale date markets where growers bring in fresh produce during the season, and these are the best place to see the scale of the harvest and buy in bulk. Along the main roads through the district, especially where they pass through or near palm groves, small roadside stalls sell dates directly, often at a lower price than in town but with less choice.

- Stickiness in moderation. Some tackiness is normal for a soft variety like Aseel, but dates that are wet or visibly sugaring out have likely been stored badly.
- Price by grade. Prices vary a good deal by grade and season; expect to pay more for the top grade sold loose in wholesale markets than for mixed or lower grades, and treat any figure you're quoted as a starting point for bargaining rather than a fixed price.
Visiting the farms
There is no formal, ticketed date-farm tourism industry in Khairpur in the way there might be for a vineyard elsewhere; the orchards are working agricultural land rather than visitor attractions. That said, drivers passing through the district during harvest season will see picking and sorting happening in full view from the road, and asking politely at a roadside stall or smaller farm is often enough to see more of the process, particularly if you're buying in any quantity. Don't expect organised tours or facilities, and be respectful of the fact that this is someone's working livelihood, not a show put on for tourists.
